Could we get more life in these threads by having more characters based on modern conventions rather than older ones?

I mean, I think we've pretty much exhausted silver age superheroes.
>>
>>80894277
The thread depends on people actually posting in it, usually people with ideas who want to share them, or people who want to do something in the setting, or people who want to suggest an independent setting.

What do you mean by modern conventions? Because what comes to mind when I think of that is nothing but black kevlar, all black, no color, face cutting, the universe has been rebooted... again, and "let's just dump this whole story line and resolve it in-a cheap cop out way because this huge mega clusterfuck crossover just isn't working like how we hoped".

In all honesty, I like being able to keep our distance from the crap the big two pull on the regular these days.

Or do you mean something else since most of what I listed probably counts as aesthetics and not conventions.
>>
>80894562
>let's just dump this whole story line and resolve it in-a cheap cop out way

Wasn't this a huge complaint in the Silver Age too? That's why they tried to put those disclaimers about NOT A HOAX! NOT AN IMAGINARY STORY! on the covers, because people were getting sick of the cop-out dream endings and other asspulls.
>>
>>80894562
I was talking more in the cartoon realm, which, at the moment is dominated by brightly coloured action-adventures.
>>
>>80894636
I was thinking of Red Lantern Power Girl specifically (among other stuff in the red lantern series) when I said that, but yeah, I guess they've always been doing that.

>>80894660
There's not a lot of action-adventure cartoons on-going right now, most are straight up comedy.

I haven't seen any of the more recent Marvel cartoons, so I have no idea about them.

How about we start putting in-universe stories together?

Like, what kind of books, movies, shows and comics are about in the /coc/ world?
>>
>>80895454
I remember when we were discussing a possible Breast Wars II a while back, someone had the idea that Ladybug grew up reading old Golden Girl/Golden Guardian comics.
>>
>>80895454
I see them as having magical stories taking place through (to us) mundane happenings. Exchanging letters with a pen pal turns in to a story wherein the letters give birth to the version of the writer that comes across from their words. A road work diversion on the journey to work leads someone down a road they have never been to, and they end up in a different version of their own world.

When everything in your world is outlandish and strange (to us) and so many things start from this, the idea of having a mundane cause would probably be fantastical to inhabitants of the /coc/verse.

Is this the new book by Murakami?
>>
>>80896056
So she has a scythe.
Is she a reaper, a harvester (farm worker), bounty under, or is the scythe magic?

Could be just a farmer who has to deal with those big monsters that go through tornado ally (in the /coc/verse tornadoes might be replaced with giant monsters there).
So she could be an armature monster buster.
>>
>>80896673

I've considered the "reaper" and "magic scythe" angles before, but never got any solid ideas. And someone actually brought up the "farmer/harvester" idea the last time I tried to get some ideas for her in a thread like this.

I'm horrible at brainstorming these sorts of things; haven't had much practice in creating characters.
>>
>>80895808
I approve of a separate meta setting with stories like this. I think we've really gone as far as can be gone with super heroes in these threads.
>>
>>80896800
Well what do you want to do with her? Is there a type of story you like?

>>80896893
That might explain why Erin has had staying power.
>>
>>80897250

I want to write a story with her. That was actually sort of the impetus for her creation: the original sprite of her was a gift, and the only prompt I gave the artist who made it for me was to design an OC about whom I could write a story.

As for the type of stories I like: eh, can't really say off the top of my head.
>>
>>80897250
Erin is a total waste of a character. By that I mean she's like many others with a nebulous canon that aimlessly gets brought up and forgotten again. Nothing really solid to work off which can make it frustrating to tell a story with her.
>>
>>80897386
OK, so lets start with the girl.

What's she like? Is she the energetic fun thrill seeking type or the morbid reclusive shy type?
>>
>>80897541

Given the color choices of her clothing (and the fact that she carries around a fucking scythe), I'd go with the former more than the latter.
>>
>>80897522
It's actually pretty solid.
Erin works for Boss Imp and does jobs, the over arching plot is some of these jobs lead to Boss Imp regaining his kingdom.
Between her and her jobs are sometimes the other demon kings.
By doing these jobs she learns what she needs to know to help fix the portal to the /coc/ Earth.

She's actually very easy to come up with stories for, it's just committing to writing those stories is where everyone gets hung up at since hardly anyone wants to commit to something like this.
>>
>>80897647
I think they were saying that her "story" is wasted on her non-character.
>>
>>80897647
I think some people want more characters/settings to have what BQ has, which is a collected encyclopedia of characters, places, and themes associated with them. The wiki is alright for some of that but a lot of the material is sort of spread out and some stuff doesn't have complete entries. Of course that would require a motivated person to sort all of that out and organize the data for whatever character/setting their interested in.
>>
Bump to save.
>>
>>80898161
There's already a page for both the Erin stories and the 12 demon kings.

I've been thinking about making a characters page for the Humming bird setting, but I haven't gotten around to it.

So who would be the big bad for BW2? Plana was for BW1.
>>
>>80903104
Someone from the Supermoms universe who got a hold of some of the dimensional portal tech left behind?

Breast Wars wasn't even the first time the /coc/verse crossed over with the Super Moms-verse.

There was the proto-Breast Wars of the Super Moms vs. the Sageworthy Society, then there was Breast Wars, then there's BW2.
>>
>>80903226
Will there be a coalition of baddies or just one Supermom villain running the show?
>>
>>80903541
Which do you think makes for a better story?

The problem with bad guys in an alliance is they all try to back stab each other and one of them always ends up looking like a chump even if they've been shown before to be strong enough to go toe-to-toe with a group of heroes before.
>>
>>80903619
Well Plana is an empress with an entire nation and military to back her up, so she didn't need anyone else. If we're gonna use a Supermom's villain, they're a LOT more small time than that so I assume there'd need to be a few of them working together to pull off something.

As someone who was heavily involved with the Erin/Demon lore development and world building, Erin is a full fledged character to me. It's difficult sometimes to remember that not everyone is as invested in the characters as everyone else, and so there's an iceberg scenario where there's so much more thought and potential surrounding the characters that's basically underwater and only the very tip has made it visibly into the thread.

So, what do you actually want this character for? If you're not an idea guy, I imagine you're not writing her story, and if you got someone else to draw her, I'm guessing you're not going to be drawing her comic.

What exactly are you expecting to happen here?
>>

>Ladybug-themed superheroine.

What the fuck, I came up with that first.
>>
>>80914127

>If you're not an idea guy, I imagine you're not writing her story

I'm gonna try to once I figure out her character. When I say I'm not an idea guy, I meant that I'm not the kind of person who can just create a fleshed-out character in ten minutes - mainly because I've never had to (and never tried otherwise). I need practice, and a little collaboration never hurts.

You're going about it wrong. You don't need your character fully defined before the story begins. Determine what kind of story you want to tell and let that help you decide what kind of character she needs to be for you to tell that story.

The story should shape the character as much as the reverse.

>>
>>80917091

>now I picture a scythe being used like a hockey stick

Not to worry - that idea didn't cross my mind, and I think it sounds a bit dumb besides, so I won't be using it.
>>
>>80899960
I think the /coc/verse is too based on superheroes to allow for a lot of other kinds of settings and stories. The in-universe fiction idea would be a way to get around that.
>>
>>80917296
America in the /co/verse is superhero central. England has a heavier magic bias. The history guy wanted to set the story in Canada, so the option exists to change it up a little.
>>
>>80917522
>England has a heavier magic bias

I thought it was established that there was no magic in the /coc/verse?

I remember someone trying to put forward some magical and fantastical Brit characters, only for people to say that there is no magic?

Besides, we still bump in to the problem of cross contamination. A "what if Spider-Man went to Hogwarts?" issue.
>>
>>80917585
There's a sort of turnaround. Magic was in a heavy decline until recently in-universe. The same event that ravaged the British equivalent of Containment, and got Erin trapped in the demon planes caused a notable resurgence.

There was always some amount of magic though. One of the earliest characters was Doctor Corson, master occultist.
>>
>>80917810
I always imagine the /coc/verse being a series of 'walled cities,' with each genre being totally independent of others.

But I still imagine /coc/ taking place in a world where common technology is at an early 90s/late 80s level. This makes various story points make more sense since people can't just pull a camcorder out their pocket and film that tiny second a masked hero lost their mask, upload it to Youtube, and now everyone knows Bruce Wayne is Batman.

I see magic as being something that anyone can do to an extent (using reagents or a wand), but only some can do naturally.
>>
>>80918232
Learning Magic in the /co/verse is a deeply personal experience and different for everyone. It was overtaken by science and technology because they work the same way every time for everyone. You could spend a year trying to learn how to produce flames from your fingertips and possibly not ever be able to do it, or you could pick up a lighter from the convenience store.
>>
>>80918445
I want to imagine that /coc/ Britain has an open culture of magic. Like there's ancient magical schools and shit like that. To have it so magic is so sidelined just seems really unimaginative to me, or that we're still trying to fit a totally different setting in to the American modern superhero world.
>>
>>80918837
It's probably seen as very antiquated and inefficient, but its existence is acknowledged, just forgotten. Most people who know magic are probably hobbyists.

>"Who has time for all that?"

There are ways around it though. Incantations and rituals are mostly for conjuring spirits or demons and basically making them do your job for you. You can also get a sponsor of a sort, like the Seasonal girls. Artifacts and tools can be enchanted to hold magic for different purposes as well. There are drawbacks to each, since either you've got to strike a deal with a powerful entity, bind demons, or have prepared artifacts with exactly what you need, and true wizards aren't likely to lend much respect to conjurers and spiritual hosts.

>>
>>80920665
That seems like a real cop-out, and takes away what could make a particular setting unique. Having magic be an openly common thing, amongst "modern" technology, is a setting that hasn't really been explored all that much.
>>
>>80926966
The issue with that is if you give everyone magic it takes a lot away from magic as a whole. The idea is that magic is rare and special, and that the characters who do have access to it are unique and valuable. Lesser magic characters like the Bearded Skeleton become exceptionally useless if literally everyone can cast spells like it's nothing.

It'd be like saying everyone in the USA is a metahuman. Diving Belle struggles to be useful with her weak powers- if everyone has powers, she really won't have much to do, will she?
>>
>>80927054
I meant it more in that not everyone is a wizard in D&D, but magic is still an observable and widespread fact.
>>
>>80927402
>>80926966
Okay, what part of >>80920665 is copping out, then?

Magic exists, but it's largely impractical. It's what keeps it from being just another technology.
>>
Magic was in decline for a long time in the /coc/verse and the current magical resurgence I like to think of as an economic bubble, and that's why most of the magical creatures are staying in their safe havens since they know it won't last too long (comparatively, they're all mostly very long lived).
>>
>>80928560
And the current levels of magic in /coc/ U.K. probably plae in comparison to what they once were about a thousand or more years ago.

>trying to think of a story set in a normal school as magic begins resurfacing
>it keeps turning in to an anime
>>
>>80930390
Well anime has done the school setting to death and beyond, so it's pretty hard coming up with something original there.

I've never really gotten the appeal of a school setting when the theme is just "mundane BUT THEN A TWIST" since it could work with almost anything else just as well, like a normal office building, or a bus driving company, or window washer, or a repair guy.
>>
>>80930628
The idea with the school setting is it's something (almost) everyone can relate with. Not everyone has been a window washer or a repair guy but just about everyone has been to school. There's a certain level of self-insertion meant to go on with your typical high school hijinx setting, a certain feeling of "that could have been me!"
>>
>>80930628
Probably because high school is a really relatable setting. Everyone's been there, and everyone wanted something interesting to happen while they were. Then after spending your day at a boring place you go home to a boring place.

Even Harry Potter is set in a high-school.
>>
>>80930860
>>80930873
This, but also, kids are required to be at school, so it solves the problem of "why do these people keep running into this shit." On top of that, you can use classes and field trips to introduce new things very easily. It's not only relatable, but has an easy, built-in structure that's very adaptable for making ongoing stories.
>>
>>80930873
When I was in high school four hurricanes blew over it in rapid succession.
Having something interesting happen while in high school is overrated if you ask me.

You fantasize about something, ANYTHING to break up the monotony of school life, but then the reality is when something finally does happen you wish that it wouldn't have.

You could incorporate that into the "normal school as magic begins resurfacing" plot idea.
>>
>>80930390
>>80931772
Maybe this would be set sometime after what we consider the "modern day" in the /co/verse, hinting at some sort of major event that brought magic back to the forefront that hasn't occurred yet as of Cosmic Crusaders' storyline. That gives a lot of leeway to work around the low-magic setting.
>>
Now I'm just trying to think of a way to have a major female character with unnaturally coloured hair.

Also wouldn't this all take place before modern/coc/?
>>
>>80931772
Opening of story confirmed for magical hurricane.
>Miss. Morris, there's a hurricane coming.
>Don't be silly, we don't have hurricanes in Engla- Oh...
>>
>>80932605
Assuming modern /coc/ is 2010-2012 and whatever the fuck thing that happened in Britbongland takes place before then, then yes.

The time line is all kinds of screwy. Some people want everything to have been established for ages, some want things that are meant to be new to stay new forever despite time still marching on.

I'd say /co/ntainment officially formed during 2009, became competent during 2010 (Rookie's promotion to captain), bought out the Queen's Queers during 2010, the Alpha business happens in 2010 - 2011, and the Ladybug comic story takes place over 2011 - whenever, just to start to begin to try and attempt at placing events together.
>>
>>80932605
Her light blue hair is what draws her to the boy looking out thr window from near the back.
>>
>>80932605
I thought you were trying to make this concept ~less~ anime.
>>
>>80932605
>>80933414
Alright, so, an average black-haired black-eyed ethnically Japanese boy meets a cute exchange student girl with unnaturally colored hair and eyes, who seems to have an undue interest in him. Soon she drags him into a world of magic, mystery and midair sword battles, meeting several other wackily-coiffed girls who all fall in love with him at first sight as he discovers his hidden true potential.
>>
>>80933414
It's going to end up as either HP or anime no matter how hard we try.
>>
>>80933625
So we go the opposite route and end up with Magical Girl Neil?
>>
>>80933615
>implying he doesn't take her on the adventure as she tries to see the non-magic reason for it.
>"Are you telling me you don't believe in magic?"
>"Of course I don't."
>"But...Your hair..."
>"My uncle is Sicilian."
>>
>>80933888
Better yet, give the boy the wacky hair and make the girl super normal and boring.

Ok how about this, the Sinister Sorceress happens upon a magical artifact that magnifies her powers enough to where she can tear open portals to other dimensions. Gathering the assorted rogues gallery of Supermoms (some of which by force), she intends to steal other powerful items from other universes and use it to take over Supermoms-verse. The Supermoms gather a band of heroes from across the dimensions to battle the Sinister Sorceress and win the day.
>>
>>80934349
It's as good as any plot device.

How do the Supermoms get allies from the other dimensions though?
>>
Why oh why are we brainstorming "Breast Wars 2"

We never even got the first one made
And this one doesn't even seem to center on Breast Quest so it'd be, like, Mom Wars or something

He was just drawn a couple threads ago, before that he was just a name in the background bio of Captain Stocking Arms.

Those are the only two pics of him so far, if you have a twist on his design, or a new one for him, then feel free to act on it.
>>
>>80899074
It's actually been a while since I've added a page to the wiki.

The things I'm thinking about are:
-Tir Tairngire/Characters
-Some other Youth Coalition members (don't know which)
-Breast Wars (I'd probably just dump what was in the google doc for it onto the page since I did save a copy of the doc)

There's probably some newer stuff I can add, but I don't remember what it might be.
>>
>>80938428
Not to mention both Super Moms and BreastQuest would need at least some form of establishing comic each beforehand.
>>
>>80942984
>Not to mention both Super Moms and BreastQuest would need at least some form of establishing comic each beforehand.

Very funny, 90% of the shit that gets talked about in these threads doesn't have a comic or anything close to it. That is definitely not a requirement or the topics of conversation in /coc/ would evaporate instantly.
>>
>>80943891
It's kind of silly to have a crossover before you have the things it's crossing over. Obviously planning the crossover is doable but focus for Supermoms and Breast Quest should be on addressing the hangups in their own project before committing to a joint one.

At least, that's my thought on the matter.
>>
>>80943972
What about every crossover that has ever happened ever? Was Avengers and Justice League "done" when they had their crossover? This is a fundamentally stupid argument.
>>
>>80945488
Doing a crossover before you do Issue #1 of the actual comic is fundamentally stupid.
>>

Nice.

I think we're going with making Nyxiontus a classical villain where he doesn't do the same thing twice and values presentation.

Sounds like they'd mesh together well. She arrives to a new school, and ends up with this boy who's sure that magic is coming back, and that she's all part of it (not responsible or anything, just a single event). Which is now making me think of there being a high-school secret club where a small group of kids talk about conspiracy theories about why magic is starting to resurface.

>>80947695
Cool Erin.
>>
>>80948347
Do they meet behind the gym during lunch hour to talk about the latest magical events in the local tabloids?

Is that actually a viable meeting place at a school in the U.K.? I really only have open school concepts to pull from and I think theirs would be more indoors and built up instead of built out.
>>
>>80948455
A lot of countryside schools have all sorts of shit.

Especially those that are converted religious buildings. My school had one class that used to be a church, so there was a doored off belltower on the back wall.

Even modern buildings can have forgotten parts, probably even more in a British south-coast city, since they probably stuck a bomb shelter under it then forgot about it after the war.
>>
>>80948623
Also a lot of buildings from the reformation have priest holes that people are still only now finding during renovations.

>>
>>80955088
And on that thought, would the ghost of a priest be more powerful than just a regular ghost?
>>
>>80956778
Depends on if their religion is real in-universe.
>>
>>80956976
I think the way it works in-universe is if you can get enough people to believe in something, a god will be created for it, or some entity will fill the position of god for it.

Pratchett's Small Gods seems to be the primary inspiration.

That volcano goddess Skathi fights way back when might've found a new position unrelated to volcanoes if she needs believers for power.
>>
>>80955088
I think having ghosts takes away the concept of the place.

A secret club about the resurgence of magic is a bit pointless is a place with ghosts.

Also, I see this idea being before the Bad Thing. Sort of like a fun and light adventure that's got a sinister undercurrent since we know what's coming.
>>
>>80958038
So it's before huh?

So is it just a bullshit club and then they accidentally fuck things up?
Or is it just coincidence that a big magical hurricane shows up later?

Probably a slow burn, some time before. Like 20 years or so. Could serve to show that magic is a more timeless thing than what people consider. Sort of a "every 1,000" years prophecy being really fast for magic, even if it's an impossible time for a human to really wrap their heads around when you start thinking of all the changes that happen in such a time. So this being 20 years before everything goes fugazi is a long time for us, but for magic it's instant.
>>
>>80976517
Now I'm totally imagining one of the group being part of a Geocities webring about magic.
>>
>>80976517
20 years might be too much, maybe. The fairy invasion happened because the fae were convinced magic was dying and something had to be done, after all.
>>
>>80976944
Man, now I remember MS-DOS.

It's funny that even elementary schools in the early-mid 90s had computers.

>>80977390
That was around 1979 or maybe a little earlier. Could be later if Hummingbird's mom stuck around after the invasion was defeated to have a further romance with Hummingbird's dad.

Assuming the Youth Coalition was formed around 1989 at the latest (which is probably about the time Diving Belle and Ladybug were born), and Hummingbird is in her 30s by the 2010s, then the mid 90s would work for this.
I think about 1991 is about the time the Youth Coalition would be disbanded.

And the magical resurgence I think really should be like an economic bubble where it's going to collapse soon from a relative standpoint. Of course that could be a few decades of low/medium levels of magic since it's still not a high enough concentration to support the fae before it drops back down again.
