Pokemon came in the 90's. So, it would be Western 90's influenced first and foremost.
Every episode would be an unsubtle advertisement of a new toy, a new game, or a new TCG expansion pack.
Lots more episodes where young, post-college writers vent about their relationship problems.

- Something CG'd or Flash'd.
- Ash still would be the idiot hero-like protagonist, but able to articulate other words beside "pokemon", "pikachu", "battle" and "food".
- He'd actually catch some legendaries and not release pokemon.
- He would be engaged with Misty until now (which is the worst idea ever, by the way) and replaced by the end of the first arc.
- Team Rocket would eventually switched by a new villain team every arc, but with their own comical-esque members.
- Still an episodic series in a nutshell, but less dumb.

I find that hard to believe. There's no way an over 800 episode series can only have one bad arc.
There's no recommended episode list as far as I know and I'm not going to dig through hundreds of episodes just to find the good ones.
I want the series to get a hard reboot where every region is 26 episodes max. If Ash is not allowed to become the Pokemon Master, every League victory should end in him being crowned a title other than Master, and he just assumes the next region will properly crown him.

I kept up for a little while until it became PAINFULLY formulaic down to the introductions with the guest character of the day, and the battles just became 'pokemon stands still while a cgi effect appears'
i miss the earliest days, when it felt like anygoddamnthing could happen. i didnt know all the pokemon yet so it was just so fucking open-ended. and just for good measure they gave us one in the first episode that wouldnt be introduced in a game for years. researching all the shit about them felt so... satisfying. Like I could actually LEARN, and i had to do so by watching, reading, asking other kids about the games.. no internet yet.
