Yeah, it was too bad. Everything else about the show improved just as the fights declined (I mean, it's still not a good show, but it's much better than it used to be).

The story direction has been planned for a long time, well before Monty died. So his death wouldn't have affected major events, or the story's general direction.
As for the smaller things, I'm not sure how involved he was in that stuff anyway. Maybe a bit.
