Can we discuss superhero rogue's galleries? The bad, the good, the so-so?

I of course love Spider-Man's villains a lot, even the z-listers like Mirage or the Enforcers.

Who's your favorites? What makes a good villain for a hero?

Is savage dragon any good ?
I'm reading through Spawn and unlike the horrible youngblood crossovers I actually found the dragon ones fun
>>
>>80819868

Kingpin for instance?
Appeared in ASM for 20 years, now primarily a Daredevil villain.
>>
>>80819933
Savage Dragon is basically a comic that simultaneously rips on the 90's X-TREME fad and revels in it. It's pretty fun.
>>
>>80819509
A clone, but yes.
>>
>>80819933
It's pretty solid for the first 100 issues. Now it's mostly silly comic nonsense so pretty much Spawn with less Satan

Can someone recommend me a good Spider-Man comic? I tried reading the early Lee stuff and found the writing to be lacking, same with JMS, Slott, some Brand New Day stuff and Kravens Last Hunt which is supposed to be good, but the writing is just lacking compared to other comics.

Would you read a Superior Foes styled comic for Ironman's rogues? Call it The Invincible Foes of Ironman another anon came up with that 10/10 name. It doesn't have to be a comedy, just a group of Ironman's rogues have joined forces to accomplish some kind of goal.

Green Arrow has some legit interesting rogues in his gallery. Or could, if they took time to play with any that aren't just the villains from other heroes' galleries.

I was looking at his list to see who could be brought into Arrow a couple years back and all sorts of ideas were bouncing around.
>>
>>
>>80820272

It'd definitely work. Some of those guys need some screen time.

You should only have one "evil/amoral guy in Iron Man knockoff suit" though. That's the problem people have making Iron Man villains, they just all make a Crimson Dynamo.

Iron Man has fantastic rogues and its a damn shame everyone's been playing the "Tony's his own worst enemy" card so hard lately.

Like its a good story but we need a break from it.

Living Laser is Electro-tier horrifying, Blizzard and Melter could be cool with some tune ups, Controller, Spymaster and Ghost are great at attacking Tony in ways a suit of armor can't help with, the list goes on.

The weird thing is that the run that introduced the "Tony fucks everything up for himself" plot twist (which others imitate constantly) was O'Neil's run and he used LOADS of villains in that, both old and new. It's like people only read the first few "Demon in a Bottle" issues and then ignore the rest of the run up until #200 where Tony squares off with Iron Monger.

Also any subsequent attempt to give Tony flaws just comes off as forced. He doesn't need any more flaws than what he already has.
>>
>>80820737
>Have a character who is pretty much based on escaping.
>Waste that with her being a jobber villain.

She seems pretty boring but they could easily spice her up by giving her that 'Shocker' angle of sorts: IE she isn't interested in beating Spiderman, just getting away with her crime.
>>
A lot of heroes have potentially great galleries that really just need some love.

Wonder Woman has some potentially amazing rogues who never get any goddamn screen time because every other author either wants to make her book God of War or just forgets about them.

Superman's gallery is underrated, I liked what Johns was doing to try and give the non-Luthors of the crew a boost but he bailed too quickly like he always does on Superman.

X-Men had some great villains until they all became X-Men for some goddamn reason.

I liked that Waid was willing to use Daredevil's non-Kingpin/Bullseye bad guys. His Jester revamp was particularly clever.
>>
>>80820781
Yeah, its kind of like Professor X in that we've explored the man's flaws really well and now writers keep going back to that well and its so dry cacti can't grow there.
>>
>>80820781
Too many flaws is always a disaster that leaves no real character.

Carol for instance. Memory loss/depowered? Rape victim? Alcoholic? It's like every writer that touched her couldn't figure out what to do with her hence she sucks.
>>
>>80820739
I love the freaky design of OG Beetle, the later tech-armor looks don't quite cut it.

To be fair, Spidey has some powerful allies, not even including the FF, there are his successors or characters who are inspired by him: Spider-Girl, Ultimate Spider-man, Spider-Woman 1-3, Steel Spider, Scarlet Spiders and Toxin. If he died, there are literally 5 or more other characters who are based on him that can replace him, or if he needs help tackling more than one of his enemies.

I really like Spot because of his bit in the 90's animated series
But I'm not sure I'd call him a great villain. He's kinda lacking in the interactions department and I think that's what makes for a great villain, good hero-villain interactions.
Lizard has the whole 'I don't want to hurt Connors' interaction with Spidey
Green Goblin has being Harry's uncle
Kingpin in the 90's show had being the man behind the villains who was untouchable by law shtick
Venom has 'oh shit, he knows my personal life'

There's some villains I like but don't really make it into the 'big time'. Rhino's iconic, but he's always just the brute.
Carnage is fairly popular, but his interactions with Peter aren't anything special. He's always out to kill someone, he's a threat any hero could face
I really love Electro, but I can't really think of a definitive story for him

So, to sum it all up, I actually have no clue what makes a popular villain. Maybe it's the design

I've always been kinda upset that Deadpool has never had an stable rogues gallery.
I mean, he's had various enemies, some of them also interact with other characters, others don't and were made just for his comics, but the second kind doesn't really last that much most of the time.
The thing is probably that Deadpool kills, but, yeah, that hasn't been a problem for others, like Captain America, whose enemies must have a record for dying and coming back.

I'm pretty sure that was Spider-Man's thing too, just that he didn't kill anyone
Still, Deadpool has had really nice interactions with villains like Taskmaster, Bullseye, Black Tom, Madcap... And he is also great to face against those ridiculous D-Listers that don't really appear in comics anymore because of how retarded they look or act.
Writers just need to remember that instead of adding more lame one-off villains that don't last. Also, use movie synergy to bring back Ajax and make him as petty as Professor Zoom.

Marvel in general has a huge "Lets redeem the female villain/make her an anti-hero or victim." thing. I mean COMICS in general do, and it doesn't help that the biggest fans of female villains in both companies, at least the vocal ones, are all about them being morally gray untouchable/usables.

I tried my best.

Also King Shark really isn't a Batman Villain and Taskmaster isn't a Spidey villain.

Maybe put Murmur in the same category as Man-Bat and Morbius. He's not exactly a monster like they are, but he's got an almost supernatural aura of horror about him.

Most writers don't like the thought Spidey wailing on bitches, or at least doing more than just webbing or blandly grappling with them, I guess.

muh nigga
I dont think Marvel really knows what to do with the guy - he is essentially an Anarchist-terrorist Batman , he should be an morally ambivalent character who may be right but uses the wrong methods , a genius who tries to change the world for the better using terrorist acts , a little bit like Ozymandias in Watchmen mixed in with the Joker in The Dark Knight

If Pete died, whoever killed him would be dead as soon as his friends found out.

Doctor Strange has a super under-rated rogues gallery. I hope the movies do them justice, but I shudder to imagine what will happen when Jason Aaron gets his paws on them.

Villains don't usually play along well. Too many extreme personalties in the same place. Each wanting a piece of the hero for themselves. Doesn't usually work.
>>
>>80823292
>public spectacle
whoever kills a beloved hero would be gutted by other heros or the masses
You think joe citizen is going to accept sandman killing peter parker? you think he wouldn't demand his head on a pike within the day? the way marvel civis treat heros its a miracle half the supervillians haven't gotten the death penalty

That Captain Marvel's villains are all exactly what you'd get if you asked a kid to draw a bad guy.

Nope, that is actually Hitler that survived WW2 because of comicbook science, and then he decided best place to be is in American KKK which is totally not a hamfisted social commentary.

What?
You don't know... F-Fred Osborn?
Norman's retarded brother and family secret that drank the goblin formula because he thought it was orange juice?

There already IS a character archetype for this. V from V for Vendetta/Anarky/every single character in The Movement.
Antihero who uses violence for greater good and social change, but won't stoop down to simple terrorism that would put innocents in harm's way.

>won't stoop down to simple terrorism that would put innocents in harm's way
and that's the main difference in my idea - Flag Smasher is a villian not an antihero, and terrorism is a tool in his utility belt - he will kill innocents for the greater good of the world - thats why I said he's like Ozzy
