I really don't think we're watching the same show. They address multiple types of relationships between characters. Some of them are healthy, some of them aren't.
The ones that are healthy, like Ruby and Sapphire, are rooted deeply in understanding and communication. And even they're shown to have their issues.

SU however has flawed characters that make bad choices but learn and advance, it doesn't preach tolerance but it does show how sensible it is.

I watched the Too Many Birthdays episode and didn't liked it, I've tried to watch more episodes but I can't make it through because it makes me cringe a bit, also I don't like Steven's character design at all.

1. The episode is called So Many Birthdays (last I checked, it might have changed again), but I think this might be a stein/stain universe issue.
2. early episodes are cringeworthy at times
3. Steven's design doesn't change substantially in later episodes but he does slim down a little bit, get his hair under control, and get larger, less creepy pupils.
If you can't stand stocky 8 year old boy looking protagonist you won't be able to get through the series.
At least until sword and board Stevonnie becomes his regular battlemode later.

Those 52 episodes have a combined length of about 13 hours, or the same as a single season of any given hour long show. SU is of perfectly normal length.
And you only really have to get to episode 12 to determine whether or not you're going to like the show.
