So how I into comics?
Not just today's stuff but also the old stories. I'm not really fussed with owning a physical copy; is there somewhere online where I can read from say Issue #1 of whatever onward? Marvel or DC, either one or both is fine.

You don't start with #1s, start with "graphic novel" (limited series) and landmark writers (Morrison's Justice League, Miller Daredevil, Johns Lantern...)

I am a total noob so I'm not exactly sure how continuity works in comics.
Well, it's easier to start with Marvel since there's Marvel Unlimited meaning you can read a lot of runs for just $10 a month. If you're okay with pirating then just pick a character, then ask for which run to start on and that's it. There are tons of recommendations online. There's also the /co/ recommended tumblr page but it's barely updated and you're probably better off just asking for new ones here.

Long story short, it doesn't. If there's prior knowledge needed, the writer will provably explain on a need to know basis, tho you as a writer also need to keep an open minded "take it as it comes" approach that's unique to american superhero comics. No one expects you to read 800+ Detective Comics and 600+ Batman comics. What superheroes are you interested in? Name 3 or so.

OG run under Stan Lee is great, but the way those old books are written will probably put you off. J Michael Straczinky's Amazing Spider-Man run and Brian Michael Bendis' Ultimate Spider-Man will keep you occupied for a long, long time. Also, make sure to read Kraven's Last Hunt.

It's mostly Marvel. The only one that interests me from DC is Batman - never really been big on Superman or any others.
I'm interested in main ones like Spider-Man, Iron Man etc but I'd be up for anything less known too.
