not pictured: 1-800 MICE and some shitty comic about William The Conqueror
>>
>>80597612
I said it in the last thread: 1-800-MICE is the most original comic I've ever read and anyone who owns it gets immediate Bro-Status. Trying to get Thurbers Art Comic but postage is prohibitive as fuck, I need like a mortage to buy them shits. He's probably only the genuine cartoon heir to the dadaist tradition working today, as well.
Just got Big Kids, it and Lose 7 are amongst the best things Deforge has ever done, I was a bit disappointed by Dressing though desu, not so much the stories (the "illustrated text" piece with the "realistic" drawings was interesting but the rest suffered 'cause it was printed so small with small panels that a lotta the impact was lost. The "jumping family" story was very cool, though, I liked that.
Really enjoyed Inner City Romance, too, I was so hyped I got it as soon as it came out, I hope someone collects The Doll next, it's even better (and a helluva lot more consistent) than ICR, as good as that comic is.
Gotta ask a fellow reader, what's all the fuss about Carlos Gonzalez? I remember his flyleaf pages in Kramers...6 (I think), and know that lots of "art" cartoonists totally suck his johnson but as a reader, collector and not (as far as I know!) a taste-maker critic, what do you really make of his stuff? Is it a satisfying read? Or (as I suspect like a total philistine) a comix case of The Emperor's New Clothes?
Oh and any Faulkner/Joyce/Pynchon fan is a-okay with me, mang.
(Are you the Anon who posted the Japanese Businessman book ages ago when you got it? If so I think we were talking about Dressing and Deforge in general, I posted as vollsticks then)

Thurber is a beast, Art Comic is coming out collected from D&Q at some point so you should hold off on the issues unless you really want to own them individually. I think you're underrating Dressing a bit desu, stories like the Christmas dinner and the animals with guns one are really striking. He has always been great with colouring but imo Dressing is where he took it to the next level. Big Kids was amazing, I've only read it once but I would say its currently my favourite deforge ever.

Gonzalez has quite a cool style and is a decent writer but honestly I cannot recommend Test Tube, he has potential to do something really great but Test Tube is not that comic, I think if he had given himself more issues and not basically abandoned two of the three main plotlines halfway through then it would have been much better. If he ever does an OGN or a longer series I would buy it though, he's definitely worth watching.

And I'm going to be honest that Faulkner book is unopened but it's the next thing I'm going to read and I have high hopes.

Also yes that was me, I probably just typed out again more or less what I said about Deforge last time, oops.
>>
>>80598539
Neat
>>
>>80598618
Oh shit yeah I forgot about the tooled-up animals, that was cool! And Xmas dinner was okay but nothing special to me. You read Lose 7 yet? Haven't cracked it or Big Kids yet...been fucking jizzing over Crickets 5 (don't worry, I use mylar bags), it's that good, artcomix narrative masterpiece, Harkham has really come into his own. You would swear he worked in the b-movie industry in the 70's, the verisimilitude is fucking stunning...
It's weird, Gonzalez has been putting out minis and stuff for years, he's like a secret "cartoonists cartoonist", maybe I haven't read enough but if you're like me, the first thing that grabs you about a comic id the art, reet? And he just doesn't really do it for me. I'm not a philistine, I embrace radical drawing styles if I dig 'em but his...I just don't. Thanks for the heads up Anon.
And, yes, Thurber fucking IS a beast! Can't remember if I linked this last time we were talking, I fucking love it....

Where you from? One of my LCSs may have a 100 Bullets Vol 1 for cover price. I can check for you this weekend if you'd like.

I personally own all 5 of the deluxes and my only negative criticism is that they don't have any of the great introductions that the softcovers have.

What is the MMO books below and to the right of Truth Zone? Also, I'm jelly of that Truth Zone. It was too expensive for me.
>>
>>80639223
Thanks holmes, It was expensive, but it's rad. It's not even bound, all the pages are laminated and float "loose" in the box.

Straight down is MMO Anthology #1. Those goatfuckers at Misma slit open the seal at the bottom to shove a bunch of Misma-brand bookmarks and shit in there

To the right is Blood & Thunder #2, not actually MMO but a collection of stories from many Aussie artists, including a really good one about a '78 Honda Civic. Has one of Simon's early Girl Mountain-esque stories about a damaged goods guy and a girl who can't feel pain finding something like a hidden dungeon in their colonial home.
>>
>>80639647
>all the pages are laminated and float "loose" in the box
That sounds a little annoying, but cool nonetheless. How do you find minicomics to read? I'm still lost when it comes to that scene.
>>

Thanks a lot mang!
>>80637984
Long, long time ago...when it came out basically. DESU I don't remember a great deal about it but it's preddy highly regarded...I say fuck it, not everything needs to be ted up into a neat little bow etc..purchase and enjoy!
>>80639143
These look well interesting, I like you, Anon. What I've seen of Blood and Thunder and Fever looks well interesting...there's one Aussie cartoonist I've forgotten te name of who I really like, he's "cartoony" but kind of "arty" and free with loose-ish mark-making, but controlled at the same time? Sorry that makes no sense, I've got his site bookmarked somewhere....I'm afraid I haven't drunk the Simon Hanselmann Kool-Aid yet, though.
Gonna take some photos of the contents of my longboxes tomorra if the threads still alive, I've got some fucking great, rare minis/floppies and stuff, full run of Weirdo, lots of odd old Fanta/D&Q/Last Gasp titles and stuff. Rebuilt my collection after selling 90% at the turn of the millennium.
You got some shelves to share with us Anon, please?!

Oh forgot to post the rest of my m/s purchases earlier on...ignore the timestamp, it was for the benefit of some judgemental Anon in another thread who basically ust sees me as some sort of elitist consumer of "pretentious hipster gahbage" and nothing else.
>>80612581
>>80612621
Man, I could not fucking believe how good that comic is! A mate lent me the first two issues and I inveigled a swap with him for a couple L & R doubles I didn't really want, then bought the next three (had to specially order them from my utter piece of shit "local comic shop" that mainly sells toys, decades-old back issues and certain GN's TPB's. I live in the fucking North East of England but my LCS is in Nottingham in the Midlands, that's how bad it is in my home town.
>>
>>80638388
I have no problem finding Book 1, that fucker is dirt cheap still, it's book 2 that I have a hard time finding. They have a copy at one of my used book stores but refuse to go any lower than $68 down from $80 even though it's been in their store sitting there since November.
>>
I hate how a lot of series have only one or two books out of print but all the other books are easy as shit to find still like BPRD Plague of Frogs HCs and 100 Bullets HCs, it's like they're taunting me damnit.
>>
So I pretty much only read big 2 capestuff.
would I enjoy invincible?
>>
I just ordered the Hellboy Libraries 1 and 2. I'm very excited. I've been holding off on these babies for too long. I got convinced once I saw how big they actually are and how the inside pages look. Hopefully I don't go crazy having the Libraries for Hellboy and getting the TPBs for the BPRD Plague of Frogs books since the HCs are half out of print.

Step 1 is to have enough disposable income for impulse buying.

I started with trying to get a complete MMO collection. Found Inez Estrada, Lauren Monger, and Michael Fikaris while doing that and started collecting their stuff too. Started collecting Steven Universe fanzines last year, and really got enamored with zines and minicomics. Some artists will give you good recommendations if you email them

>>80640269
Thanks holmes. No proper shelf display for these, just got em in piles. Lots of drug references in these books, discretion is the better part of valor and all that
>>
>>80640062
Not the same anon but usually when I buy a minicomic it's something I heard about on sites like comics journal or comicsreporter. There's probably other good ones too. The best thing would be to have access to a good alternative/small press convention
>>
>>80640624
Stop time traveling!
>>
>>80640326
Balls. Good luck, man.
>>
>>80640062
Not the same Anon either bt a good place t star would be Ryan Cecil Smith, he puts out some dope shit, also have a look at the whatthingsdo shop, they have some great Jordan Crane mini's (totally recommend Keeping Two)...also check out Oily Comics, they do great, cheap seasonal bundles and you can also pick and choose titles, most are like a dollar, best value minis out there and the postage is cheap. Check out Wow!Cool and the Spit and a half distro for some shit-hot minicomics, ya won't be disappointed Anon. Micropresses like Youth In Decline, Secret Acres ( I'm hyped for Sick by Gabby Schulz and they're reprinting his autobiographical herpes masterpiece, Monsters, which I thoroughly recommend)...the British Breakdown Press put out some shit-hot stuff, urmm....Secret Prison, they're dope, too...and of course now Sammy Harkham is self-publishing Crickets, 4 and 5 are still easy to get and I believe 3 has been reprinted, first editions have been going for crazy money. But I can't recommend Crickets highly enough, the D & Q issues were really good but the last three Blood of the Virgin arc constitutes the best work Harkham's ever done--about an Australian expat working in the 1970's b-movie horror film industry in LA. If you like strong narrative "realism" in the vein of, I dunno, Clowes' more realistically humane comics lke Wilson or Mr.Wonderful but with little comedy, then give 'em a try, ya won't be disappointed. At all. And combining the drawing styles of Roy Crane and john Porcellino is a stroke of genius in itself.
Oh and Uncivilized Books put out he odd minicomic but are mostly concenrating on "proper" books these days, having said that Do Not Disturb My Waking Dream by tthe incredible Laura Park is one of their minicomic seres that's well worth racking down, she's just ridiculously good (check out her stuff in Mome if you don't believe me!). And I picked up a wicked little Olivier Schwauren mini from Desert Island called Greys last year, good shit
>>
Are Vertigo trades the typically same as DC's or are they of a different quality?
>>
Is the Divinity HC worth the extra money it costs? I really liked the mini, but the paper back costs quite a bit less.
>>
>>80642966
A bunch of the Vertigo trades I've seen use a paper quality closer to newsprint which is actually nice since it goes well with older coloring in comics.

Swamp Thing and Hellblazer do it, I've been told that the new Doom Patrol book still does

I Kill Giants, Wytches and Luther Strode I highly recommend.

East of West is best read in the entirety of it's years so pick up the Year One HC instead if you're gonna start reading it.

Rumble is good but doesn't seem to be going anywhere so far sadly, it's not even James Harren's best art IMO.

Wicked/Divine is feminazi bullshit so don't buy it unless you like supporting shitty writers just cause they're women/"feminist" and I use the term feminist loosely in this context.
>>
>>80661444

I'll agree with you on Thor , Spider Gwen, and Red Hood and Aresenal but those other books are totally decent depending on what you like, at least he's buying floppies and not pirating everything like an entitled little "media is free now" faggot.
>>
What's the point of getting singles anyways? They don't display for shit, not durable, ads, etc etc. It's nice to support what you like but buying the trade is supporting it too. I assume it's just because you guys can't wait for the tpb.
>>
>>80665157
I pay for floppies that are worth my money, modern capeshit is not worth $4 a fucking pop anymore so I'd rather just pour my money into independent companies instead.
>>
>>80665952
Creators only get about 10% of the profits from paperback sales as opposed to about 50% of the profit from floppy sales. Support the series by buying the floppies unless you want it to get cancelled after only 10 issues.
>>
>>80651843

>>

DC stopped making Spectre trades after 2, but the singles are dirt cheap cause it's a 90's comic
>>
>>80665952
It's literally just supporting the creator for me + a preference for reading as things come out and in paper. I just sell my floppies afterwards and buy the TPB/HC though.

I've been wanting to go for years, they always have such a nice line up. I'm super excited about him and Marguerite Abouet, Raina Telgemeier, Chester Brown, Jeff Lemire, Marguerite Bennett, bunch of others.

I should probably start saving though

Cheers, being actually buying a bit of cape/genrestuff recently, The Vision was always one of my favourites as a kid back from the Shooter Secret Wars. My mate lent me this shitty Deadpool/Spidey comic that had the Vision #1 in it as a promo or something and I was well impressed with it so got hold of #2 and 3. I love the "Family" "banter", for an extreme logic God-machine he has a better written personality than a lot of the big name supers. Really liking the art, too.

Props for Chuck Forsman (even though I wasn't particularly taken with Revenger, it just came off as, like, second-hand Marra (which is of course third-hand Gulacy. Pun intended, maybe someone'll get the "hand" jokes....). That new vampire comic of his is pretty cool though.

WHAT. THE FUCK. Literally one of my favourite cartoonists of all time. No-one draws and tells a story visually (or "panels" as you guys are fond of saying) like her. Sorry to namedrop but I was talking to Tom Devlin about the reason why Dirty Plotte became an anthology, apparently "the writing was on the wall" for her leaving the medium then.
Got a juicy bit 'o gossip as to why Sammy Harkham "left" D & Q, too...

I really love her too, like when I first found her work it was exactly what I was trying to do with my art, imitating the look of woodcuts prints. Her poor English got to me sometime, but to think that she got pushed out kinda pisses me off. I'd love to get her to sign stuff, but I have no idea what I'd say if I met her. I know she hates talk about her coming back to comics and stuff.

What's this "pushed out"? And, sorry to be contrary but to me only her actual prints look like woodcuts, she has a nice fine-line style going on in her comics.
Props to Dan Nadel for bringing her out of retirement that one time. She's a true artisit, it's her prerogative etc but she's hardly setting the "fine" art world afire in the same way she blazed through comics. As long as she's happy, I suppose...
