Is it really necessary?

Does it even matter?

Whats the point?

It's not really a thing anymore, just an honor code of Batman and Superman, and one they even are willing to put aside.

It feels a bit disrespectful to police officers that do need to use lethal force to imply that with the right training killing could be avoided. That said most superheroes would leave so many criminals getting out due to lack of evidence or something that any attempt to make sense of cape worlds fails.

Superman has killed:
Darkseid
Doomsday
Mr. Mxzysptlk
Zod and Co.
The Joker

Maybe a few more.

Considering the most popular and highest selling comics characters of all time generally don't kill, yes it kind of matters.

What about punisher

>Darksied
>Doomsday
Didn't stick
>Mr. Mxzysptlk
When?
>The Joker
Alternate versions
>Zod
Yeah, but Kryptonians judging Kryptonians is far more morally permissible than the alternate.

Police officers get a pass though. They're within the law. Most superheroes have powers or have had way more extensive and different training than police anyways.

It's always been a weird divide among fans. I don't mind it. There are plenty of other heroes and anti-heroes that do kill in the big 2. As well as movies. I was relieved that Netflix Daredevil doesn't kill.

well yeah, you cant create a new evil character every week
it makes it feel like a villain of the week cartoon and you will never feel any real danger for the character facing a literally who n436

There's a concept called a narrative conceit. In a kungfu movie, people are going to kungfu fight to resolve their problems. In a western people are going to shoot one another.

Superheroes generally don't kill because their narrative never ends. Continuity always looks back around.

>Does it even matter?

Nothing matters. You can argue existentialism or nihilism or whatever.

>Whats the point?

The no-kill code is a holdover from when superheroes were still primarily marketed to children. Then the novelty of superheroes shifted towards older reasons but the narrative lesson still stood in effect.

Ultimately, killing doesn't matter because there is no villain who will not return to life somehow. Superheroes are only allowed to rest when they get cancelled.

Well said.

the only situation that justifies murder is when said character is saving or protecting someones life

Its so the companies can re-use villains.

When villains come back consistently, it gives them more chances to be developed as characters and become more well-rounded. It's also easier to write an established character. They're easier to get as a writer, and there's a better chance the audience will buy the premise.

Seriously how often has a one-off villain in a big two comic been engaging? It happens, but it's rare.

For batman it's more about him being a bit neurotic. Supes has the option to not kill he is very rarely in any real danger, and can diffuse a situation fast enough to remove any civilians from danger as well. They enforce justice after all and just killing someone isn't justice.

Whatever happened to the Man of Tomorrow.
