Would you say this art style is a set up or step down from the Tumblr/CalArts stuff?
I'd say the Beano look is actually inspired for this day and age compared to the faux-anime or Adventure Time shit we see all of the time.

he was best in gravity falls because his designs managed to really stand out but still fit in with the show's tone. it also helped that gravity falls wasn't this fucking ugly

Well he wasn't a writer for SB (nor GF nor This), and the problem with his spongebob drawing wasn't that they looked bad. clashed with spongebob's tone? Definitely. But you can tell that the artist has good craftsmanship
though I also don't think that the show looks ugly so we probably have different tastes

It's immensely better than more washed-out GoAnimate-tier Rebecca Sugar shit that's for sure. Might actually inspire kids to create something different in the future instead of the samey garbage we've suffered in the last decade and a half.
