They've just been killing their games off. WoW gained close to 4 million subscribers when they released their latest expansion and almost lost all of them in less than 6 months. They got to detached from what their shit great in the first place, and got to a point where they thought whatever they put out was gold just because it was by them. That shit backfired and they've been on a downward spiral since around 2010. The worst of it is they still do good sometimes, but then they get complacent and just fuck around some more.

According to the article, the stories are the same, just the presentation is different which is a big deal.
Having BIG DRAMATIC PERSONALITIES do SUDDENLY BIG SHIT works well when they're there to fill in the gaps of a really simplistic low-budget presentation but when it's presented like a movie and we don't get movie-style characterization or explanations then it all seems really arbitrary and stupid.
If the story is bad that's because Blizzard has always been bad at stories, they just knew how to present it well once upon a time.
