If he stopped being shitty, he wouldn't be Coldsteel.
Ignoring that, have him be an ordinary hedgehog that got 'mechanized' or whatever the fuck Eggman does to make those animal-powered robots, but then when Sonic defeats him the first time, he regains some control and flees.
Sonic lets him go because he doesn't work for Eggman any more, but then finds out that Coldsteel is destroying all the technology that makes the world work in an attempt to lash out against his 'creator'.
Tails and another character (say, Knuckles) job to him, Sonic shows up and beats him before Eggman shows up.
Coldsteel realizes he was wrong and sacrifices himself to save Sonic from a lethal attack Eggman has been charging as he waited for the battle to end, then Sonic defeats Eggman in the final boss battle.
Tragic scene where Coldsteel dies redeemed, Sonic and pals reflect on the moral of the story, curtains fall.
