Let's be honest here. Most people who went to see the movie expected Waypool because that's all they've been subjected to. I think they needed to add a little more humour than necessary to keep them hooked.
Now that they know his actual backstory and have a connection with the character, maybe they can play up the seriousness and emotions in the sequel.
What are the odds that the sequel will have a huge budget, so executives make a checklist of things for the script to hit that ultimately ruins what made the first movie charming?
What are the odds that DC makes a Deathstroke movie in damage control mode that flops big time because they don't understand what makes Deadpool or Deathstroke popular and ends up not really hitting the liked characteristics of either character?
What are the odds that Disney makes their own R-rated super hero movie?

Superhero movies only need 150-200 million nowadays, I doubt Fox would give them more than that, even with a successful first film. I get the sense that Fox will just let Reynolds run Deadpool considering how badly they fucked up in Origins.
