They made a variant cover for the first issue, that's all. Then people on /co/ saw that variant cover and started screaming about how that was the original art for the book but Marvel fired them for Erica Henderson, when the truth is that Ryan North wanted Erica Henderson as part of his original pitch, which means that Erica has been attached to the book since it was nothing more than an idea for a book. There was NEVER a point where Erica wasn't going to be the artist for Unbeatable Squirrel Girl and even if there was, Gurihiru was NEVER in the running to be the artist in the first place.
This is doubly obvious by the fact that it was Henderson that designed the new costume, and the Gurihiru art used Henderson's designs.

I think what we have here is different definitions of "an option."
They were never the "original art" and Marvel never fired them.
But Gurihiru are doing an ongoing for Marvel right now, so obviously they COULD have been an option if anyone wanted to pursue that idea early on in the process. Which they didn't.
But somewhere out there there IS an alternate Earth where Gurihiru draw the Squirrel Girl ongoing, and we all wish we lived there.

I was thinking about that for a while, and remembering when /co/ used to have its regular bitching threads about Moon over June or Hathor. I think the big difference between those and Squirrel Girl and Power Up etc. is that the former were written by weirdos who didn't give two shits about what I read. Kate Leth and her ilk, however, make it their life's mission to treat their work as the only acceptable comics out there and nag creators and companies to censor anything that's too racy for them, and it's for that reason that we bitch about them.
