Oldfag here who's been reading X-Men stuff since the 1980s.
I liked her in her original form, when she was this kind of classy upper-class British psychic. Once she became what she is now, I feel that most writers had no fucking clue what to do with her which would be both interesting and true to the character. I mean, what you basically had was this person who was 1/2 classy upper-class British woman and 1/2 ambiguously-defined oriental stereotype with no defined background, backstory or substance, and that latter half is mostly what was on display. How the fuck do you write something like that in a manner which is remotely identifiable to any reader?
Uncanny X-Force is the first and only time since, like 1990 that I didn't actively dislike this version of her. I felt like Remender was able to create a vision of the character which rung true and had a legitimate emotional core to her.
Aside from that, though, what you've mostly got is this weird artifact of Jim Lee's desire to draw a sexy ninja character and Chris Claremont's creepy transformation fetish who's coasted on visuals for decades.

Except that Jean was a founding member of the X-Men, while Betsy was untested and untrusted, and Wolverine let her know frequently in that period that he didn't give a shit about her. This was later remedied when she basically soloed Sabretooth (when beating Sabretooth was a pretty impressive feat).
She also happened to be on the team during the Australia era, which was the best "run" on X-Men ever. That makes her good by default.

What I've realized about many of the old Claremont stories is that there are so many physical changes to main characters that would have stayed permanent if not for some magical wave of a psychic finger, or a machine made by Forge or aliens making everything right off panel at the last minute.

It started out as one of Claremont's usual body-horror stories. Hell, originally, there wasn't even a bodyswap. Betsy had just been cosmetically altered. That's why Wolverine recognized her by scent. Claremont would have certainly changed Betsy back in due course.
But this is during the period where Jim Lee's star was rising and Claremont's was fading. Lee got more and more influence on the book while Claremont was feeling increasingly cut off and unappreciated. So Claremont ended up leaving and Lee was permitted to indulge in his Jim Lee-ness.

Uncanny X-Force v1 and X-Force v4 are decent recent reads for Psylocke, and I think she had a good moment or two with Magneto in Gillen's run.
