Directors arguably have the most freedom to take artistic choices in a production so it's easier to tell which idiosyncrasies have been added across their oeuvre. Oftentimes Directors will bring in other creative people they've worked with before to affect the overall style of a film.
Anyway most people's favorite directors are auteurs who co-write scripts, micromanage cinematography, and insert their favorite actors and themes liberally into their movies.
More hands off directors typically don't get to be peoples favorites and typically aren't given very much public recognition.
The influence of a director might be overstated but their fingerprints really do wind up all over the production.
