I think the main reason JLaw being in these movies and being shit is so infuriating is because Mystique is the one character they've got in the X-Films with a literal built in excuse for changing actors. So there was never a reason to sign her for more than one movie in the first place.

I think what you're missing here is that it's one of the longest running superhero movie franchises who turned something that is generally seen as too high-concept for movie audiences, namely time travel, and made that not only work, but made it work in an established setting that already is high concept of its own, namely superpowers. Combining two such high concept ideas into a working story, set in an established Universe, without alienating audiences is not easy, but they made it work. And that is certainly a feat.
