It has sparkly colorful art and some fappable characters, including lolis, but that's it. Which is more than enough for many /comrades to be hyped. The story and writing are bland and juvenile, the artist literally came up with the story when she was an angsty teenager and it's very evident in the writing.

No, that's the "waaah tumblr!" /co version of it. The artist had an Kickstarter that made over 300.000 bucks so she's taken the year off to work on the book, updates will resume once all rewards have been finished and sent.
Ironically one of the stretch goals of the Kickstarter that people donated for was the promised regular updates.

That's why I said recent, even that update is 2 and a half month old. She's been so bad at keeping deadlines before that I'd have a hard time believing she'd keep a date she announces even just the week before for something, much less several months before. The lack of any updates since that really dampens my hopes for a January return. You'd think there'd be some sort of "I'm back soon!" note somewhere if she really intends to go back to work this month.

The tumblr attacks happened for sure. She got contracted to do some art and animation work for Undertale, I believe. Her work computer got fried, I think. Supposedly she got married at some point and there's rumors she might be pregnant. I seem to recall there was a family crisis like a niece getting sick or dying or something. Etc etc etc. All while trying to get all the books and kickstarter rewards and shit produced.
It fucking sucks that the comic's been on hiatus for this fucking long and I've definitely had to look for other comics to fill the gap... but at least it sounds like she's got some reasonable excuses and isn't just faffing about.

That's so sad, to have your whole magnum opus overshadowed by a single secondary character that you've designed for someone else's project.
If she was at least one of the lead character designers on the game she'd have a decent claim to concept art fame (temporarily) and an excellent portfolio roster, but nope, it's just one character. And nobody who plays the game knows or cares who designed that particular thing anyway.

We got this explanation in June on her forums:
Michelle is currently hard at work putting together the Kickstarter books and other rewards for the many backers that helped make the second Ava's Demon Kickstarter such an amazing success! And that also includes working with the extremely talented Studio Yotta! to create the Ava's Demon animated short.
However, Michelle is doing all of this work almost entirely single-handedly and, as a result, it will take some time before it's all finished and updates can resume.
The hiatus is expected to continue for an as of yet undetermined amount of time, sadly. Michelle and the rest of the staff appreciate your patience thus far and are hoping that you can stick it out with us a little longer!
Please do not spam the Q&A forums or other parts of the forums with questions regarding the hiatus as they will be deleted or locked.

I also think people are going overboard with the whole Muffet>Ava's Demon claim.
The undertale fandom cares more about furries, skele-porn, and Pretty much anything else than it does Muffet, whereas AD had an entire fandom and fanart around it. Sure plenty of people enjoy Muffet, but it doesn't exaclty cast a shadow on the webcomic.

The update in July was after several months of hiatus. So yes, you can get technical and say that she had one 3-month hiatus and then a second six-month hiatus with one small update in-between, but anyone can figure out that it's just the same long break.
I mean, if you stay away from work for half a year, come back to work for one day and then bail for the remainder of the year again, do you really think your employer wouldn't still count it as you skipping a whole year of work?

Ava's a good character. She does have a good arc, even if she has little backstory.
Gil and Maggie pale in comparison. There was a whole chapter dedicated to giving Gil a sympathetic backstory, but no one gives a shit about him. Maggie is too enigmatic to really sympathize with.
