Emerald was shown to be taking shelter in Cinder (shown by her emphatic "Thank you..."), and the way that Cinder protected her during the fight with Amber established her devotion to Cinder even more.
Mercury was shown to have killed his father, and the way he acted made it seem like a good riddance to him. We saw that he's got his robot legs, and the blood on his knee bandages showed there's something to them.
Cinder's still a little flat compared to the other two, but I'm kind of fine with her mystery continuing for now, and her actions this volume were interesting and entertaining even if they're not super deep.

Her plan was to cause public distress and generally fuck things up. The only reasons we have gotten for this is that she's evil, wants power, and her boss can give her power.
It became easier because the revealing of Penny would be a public scandal.
It didn't even have to be Pyrrha to wreck Penny, her polarity's only relevance was being able to easily fight her. No memory scrambling or anything.

The Emerald flashback didn't affect how she became attached to Cinder. It actually played with what most people would think is the reason for Emerald's devotion.
The Mercury flashback only helped determine the source of his killing instinct and the nature of his lower limbs. Again, nothing special.
Cinder is the worst offender because we do not know why she even needed to be strong or feared.

O, and a female name. Ones that spring to mind are Olivia, Onyx, and Opal, though Onyx isn't much of a name. Onyx and Opal tie into that mineral aspect of injecting dust however.
Also I can't take Adam seriously with that voice. Literally one line in the season, "Bring them to their knees", and the delivery is so flat and uninspired that it kills me.
If they're going to have Adam stick around they need to recast him.
