Whichever episode it was in the first season of Korra where Tenzen and his family are caught and are about to lose their bending, making air benders extinct that shit was tense.
Until the end of the season where Korra offscreen learns how to return peoples ability.

I think I would much prefer it if Steven went down the road of being a happy slice of life comedy-adventure show and delved down into darkness and tonally stayed that way, rather than constantly jumping back to happy quirky adventures to slice of life drama to fucked up scary shit. I almost want it to go the way of Harry Potter where once it takes that dark turn it doesn't come back. Unfortunately I think they've had many chances to do so and didn't take it, so they probably won't.

Also sound design was fantastic in this ep. Not that many people praise sound design, just music and visuals.

I loved this episode. It shows that Homeworld is really full of sadistic and evil gems that made these monsters. Imagine, living thousands of years trapped with another gems, inside a dark cave. Garnet emotions in this episode too, holy shit.

If they considered to make dark episodes like this one and stop making shitty ones like Sadie's Song or the Buck Dewey one...

Dude.

Holy living shit.

What is with your people and your fascination with the boring story-centric episodes of Bebop?

That mafioso shit is lame. And Vicious is the lame kaiser.

I'd not only describe these episodes as not the best, but in the bottom half.

Fuck me. And if you think I'm wrong, DEFEND THEM. DEFEND THAT SHIT.
>>
>>79036338
I never thought about it, but one of the things that made this unnerving was recognising the pilot's design.

One usually watches series with a level of detachment, and seeing something so familiar suddenly spawn from that thing pulled me in immediately.
It's nowhere close to Garnet's shock at seeing her friends like that, but I feel it made it easier for me to put myself in her shoes

Wouldn't a true slice-of-life show go from dark to humorous to hopeful to sad, because real life encompasses all those things and doesn't just stick to one "tone?"

>>
>>79041952
Well if you mean author-confirmed you mean author said that definitely didn't happen then yes.
>>
>>79045565
Well that's the thing, is that I prefer if Steven's "slice of life" genre was simply an early on charade and changed tones. I feel like that would be more engaging because you have no idea what else to expect from the SU crew, how much more they're willing to change or fool us.

I simply think SU works better as a fantasy with dark elements than a slice of life story with some fantastical elements. Those episodes have always been some of the best, so why not stick with what works rather than the least popular formula of Sadie's Song and learning about the Mayor and Onion's family.

I liked them. They aren't my favorites but they aren't the bottom tier for me either. I didn't care for all the fauxlosophic rambling Vicious did, he wasn't that special of a villain.

But the action scenes were top notch and I liked the plots they had.

Also, for me nothing gets lower tier than Ed episodes. Shes the worst.

>>
>>79049701
A lot of people liked the slice of life stuff more than the dark stuff.

Im personally in the middle. I think slice of life stuff is good to have somewhat regularly because it makes the dark stuff more shocking compared to the lighter stuff.

If its nothing but darker plot stuff, it loses its edge since there isn't anything in show to contrast it to.

Scrubs is a good example of this. Its mostly a comedy, but its most dramatic moments are still loved today because they are in a mostly comedic show so they feel more powerful because of this. If Scrubs was just a drama, those moments wouldn't stand out because they would just be in a sea of other dramatic moments.

Shame season 2 wasn't as consistently good as season 1. They made an amazing character, and just went "Nah, we don't need to use him again, let's just do more improv and hope it's as good as the first time we did it."
