Starkiller Base's base planet is supposedly Ilum, which is where the Jedi took younglings to get kyber crystals for their lightsabers. The Ilum isn't confirmed of course, but there's lots of evidence to say it is. There's more than one planet in the galaxy that has kyber crystals, though, so the ones used in all the super laser cannons the First Order uses could have come from another source.

It will be a temporary arrangement likely brought on by bad circumstances, they will have to work together to get off the planet or something.
Kanan won't kill him cause its "not the Jedi way" or some shit and likely cause he knows he'd get his ass beat and Maul won't be too bad since he'll be trying to use them for his own ends so he won't want to make too trouble and get himself kicked out before he can complete whatever scheme he has in mind. While traveling with them he will show up Kanan while he tries to teach Ezra and tempt him to the dark side.

The two are pretty tight, and even though Filoni isn't part of story group Pablo does consult him specifically because he's George's apprentice, and Filoni has said before that there have been times when story group was going to do one thing and he stepped in and said "wait a minute, that's not how it goes"

The Story Groups main job is to make sure that none of the new stuff runs counter to any of the old things, or that which is set in stone, like the major plot points of the new trilogy. More than likely, existing story lines, like those in Rebels, or other PT or OT works, just need to be looked over to see if they have their p's crossed and their q's dotted.
Individual writers and creators have freedom in what they do and the stories they tell, the Story Group is more like editors, and that avenue has always been a two way street.
