I think because we fucked a lot with our computers, I dunno but we had a computer in my house and I just got around messing with it and that's how I learned HTML, how I learned about DOS and other shit, I met people in the internet who were really tech savvy (back then the average joe didn't have internet so you didn't meet a lot of trolls or meme people), not much social media aside from chat rooms and forums so it wasn't like we spend all the time chatting with school friends since a lot of them (at least in my experience) didn't have internet and it was mostly with strangers from different places in the world.
I mean all I used the internet for was to make shitty webpages with html, chat about Anime, and find solutions to computer problems (Microsoft didn't really have a good costumer support back then) that's about it.
Most kids nowadays is just vine, instagram, and snapchat and they access the internet through their phone and tablets and not really from a computer.
