Just finished watching this one. It's cheesy as HELL but damn, I really enjoyed it. Also, not sure if it counts here but oh well, a thread anyways.

Sandy wasn't in the movie, and Pig was pure comedic relief aside from his cool transformations. Otherwise he was a fat slob meant for laughs, but what can ya do. He's Pig.
Sandy will be appearing in the sequel though from what I've heard. This movie is before Journey to the West.

They've really toned down his mischief in the movie, I'd go as far to say they made him the "strong silent" type. But he's suppose to be the protagonist so maybe that's why he's not so much a chaotic good.

It's fun if you turn your brain off, ignore the first 5 minutes that illustrate what the movie could have been, and ignore the 1d characters. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but the ginger Amazon who serves no purpose other than to be in the "girl power joke" just annoyed me.

I've been on a Journey to the West kick lately so I actually also watched this like two days ago. It's pretty fun, with some good action and the animation is decent but not as polished as the larger american productions. Also, the kid characters wasn't annoying.
I know this is a shot in the dark but a while ago i saw a Chinese trailer for a monkey king movie but it was 2d animated and out had something to do with demon slaying. Did i dream this up or does anyone know what I'm taking about?

It's at times beautiful, but it's obviously made by people who should be/would rather be making games than movies. The story is tired, the dialogue is archaic, and the cinematography is flashy garbage with overlong and poorly paced fight scenes. Its best visual moments are lifted from PS2 era video game cut-scenes. Everything is blue and orange, effects and reliance on game-level rendering can look cheap during key moments. It's basically "everything wrong with modern concept art, the movie." It's tasteless.
That said, where it shines is choreography. It's also a big step up from previous domestic 3D films. But until China loosens up its creative restrictions and let real movie makers tell real stories instead of banning them, that advance isn't going to translate into anything with any appeal outside of their own country.
This isn't a Chinese film. It's a film with a "made in China" sticker on its back.
