Though in all seriousness, he's a c-list character who really doesn't line up with what people want. Those that specifically want a gay lead probably don't want to read ultra violence, and those that specifically want ultra violence probably don't want to see gay stuff actually happening. Also there are fans of Midnighter who are pissy about him not being with Apollo.

That's a fair point. People looking for a super-romantic or a gay best friends comic aren't going to get it. But people looking for a comic which actually touches on modern single gay life will, and it's not like yaoi-style stuff is nice and fluffy: being dangerous is definitely a big part of why Midnighter is sexy. He has this slightly creepy/slightly skeevy leather aesthetic going on which is much more specifically a gay male thing, sure, but I don't think him being violent is necessarily as much of a turn-off as you're saying.

Isn't this kinda the end game of inclusiveness? You just have a regular series filling a certain niche (in this case ultraviolence) and the main character just happens to be gay and nobody makes a big deal out of it? Marvel regularly makes legacy minority characters to increase sales, but isn't it even MORE progressive if you treat it as so trivial that it's not even worth using as a selling point?

Similarly, twitter and tumblr keep crying that Marvel doesn't have LGBT led books and that they made Herc full straight. However, the same people can't be bothered to support books like Midnighter, Constantine, Catwoman or Secret Six.
Marvel is the "hip" company and most of these people are under the impression that DC is the icky sexist, racist and homophobic company. They'd rather cry on twitter about Marvel instead of reading a good DC book that gives them what they want.
