Finally watched it, and holy shit, it's fucking perfect. The fighting is as awesome as ever even in the first fucking episode (Especially impressive since it's been so long since Alvin's last SMBZ episode), the slapstick humor is still in top form, and the animation and audio are even better than before. Even the overall presentation is more polished, with the new opening, eyecatches, credits, and music for all these things (along with the music for the closing seconds before the credits, DBZ-style) is just sublime.
I thought it wouldn't live up to my expectations, but it fucking surpassed them. I can't wait until the next episode in like May.

I'm pretty sure that with the added depth of field he's exhibiting, he'd be able to do some of the more memorable moments from new angles alongside new setpieces. Imagine, say, the Sonic vs Axem Green & Black section, the one where they form a giant axe wheel, with a greater ability to show the chase with depth instead of just Sonic running away from it on a 2D plane.
Honestly, it's sort of a minor fight, but I'm very interested in how he's going to update the Mecha Sonic vs Yoshi fight, which will probably be in the next episode of the reboot. I always loved that one in particular for just how one-sided it was and all the spots using Yoshi's tongue. Seeing all that shit with more depth should be fantastic.
What if episode 2 is all about Sonic's backstory, episode 3 is them finding Yoshi (and him battling Mecha Sonic), and episode 4 is them versus the Koopa Bros? Will episode 7 go straight to original episode 8's plot, or will Alvin just replace episode 7 with a different plotline? A real shame about him not liking the original episode 7 by the way, I loved it.

Ah, I understand.
I'm so glad that this is back. The Yoshi's Island episodes from the original series are undoubtedly the the pinnacle of sprite animation and the series as a whole still holds up pretty well today.

That would allow for an extended Yoshi tribe fight and maybe an initial Axem fight.

I didn't see a direct source, but apparently Monty's death is what got Alvin inspired to reboot it. He realized that he really had something with SMBZ, in regards to fight choreography, and remembered that it was actually a cited inspiration of Monty's. Apparently, he realized that now Monty will never see any closure to one of his inspirations, and decided to get off his ass and give it another go.
Gotta be honest, the side-by-side dedications to Oum and Iwata kinda took me aback a bit when I saw them.
