Don't start there, mate. If you want an origin story, go for Secret Origins by Johns. Or just start with Rebirth and proceed with Johns' GL run. Then you can go back and read older stuff, there are good things there, but Emerald Dawn is not a good starting point anymore.

Emerald Dawn is still a pretty good starting place. The only really dated thing with it is the drunk driving message. Other than that it sets up Hal pretty well and tread up old characters and turning them into bastardizations of themselves.I'm still really confused why Johns made Black Hand become a necrophiliac murderer when his entire shtick was shitty puns.

While I don't necessarily disagree that Emerald Dawn I and II are worth reading, they are out of date and out of continuity for the last decade or so of GL stories. That makes them a fairly odd starting point to pick, in my opinion.

Vendittis I think is better than Johns. Vendittis just seems like his old joking self but with the death motif while Johns' had him licking skulls and other shit like that. It was just jarring. I'm really sad that Sonar doesn't have his magnificent cape though.

I would say there is quite a big difference between the two origin stories. Sure, the core of "Abin Sur crash lands on Earth, passes the ring to Hal during his dying moments" is the same, but pretty much everything around that, all the fleshing out, is different. Hal's relationship with his brothers, Hal's relationship with Carol, what Hal has been doing with his life... all of that is different.
