That's one point that kinda miffs me when trans characters are included in a story, but drawn very vaguely. To me, while not intentional, it kinda downplays the whole struggle of "passing" in real life which every trans person has to face on a daily, hourly, minutely basis. Especially when starting out, which can be immensely stressful.
I asked that question because I have plans to write an FtM as half of a protagonist duo, and I wanted to see if it'd been done in (mainstream to indie) comics before. The plot wouldn't revolve around their identity by any means, but it'll be an consistently addressed point and not used for humor or gags. I really wanna give FtMs more exposure and maybe even make a role model, who knows

I barely played it so I don't know much about him but you might like Yuureitou. I'm really not a fan of manga or anime, but it's pretty good. It's a horror mystery and pretty dark and one of the two main characters - Tetsuo - is ftm, which is a big part of it. What I think is kind of 'unique' about the portrayal of trans in it is that it doesn't just cover trans problems from the perspective of Tetsuo, but also has his partner having his own problems coming to grip with being attracted to Tetsuo as a woman verses being attracted to him as a man.

Dunno! Something was just wrong, alternatives weren't working and transitioning just fixed it. Probably had something to due with a hormone abnormality. Too much natural testosterone for a female but not enough to completely stop female puberty, but also enough where I was an androgynous qt enough to pass half the time as male and I was always more comfortable that way. Tried correcting my hormones in my long winded denial phase but it exacerbated it to hell so I finally gave into transitioning which completely changed my life around for the best.

In most settings, if being transgender is a major plot point it boils down to those things because what else would it be?
The Wire is an amazing look at what being black and in a poor area is like and you never saw the type of pandering shit that you see with transgender characters a lot. The Wire typically had a message it was trying to get across but it never hit you with it across the head or made you feel bad if you disagreed, which is what you see a lot of the time with "Tumblr" type shows. People blow that shit out of proportion but it does happen.
But anyway yeah, you're right, most transgender characters aren't written well. Tokyo Godfather does one well and that's all I can think of right now.
