Why people still follow and read Marvel and DC comics?

Because it's Americana and most of us grew up with them

Why do europeans eat toast sandwiches? Why do the Japanese like anime for the exact same reasons?

There's more than enough good old cape books to fill a lifetime, but yeah the big 2 are pretty bad these days. 80's big 2 was GOAT though.

Because of industrialisation.

Marvel, DC, and other industrial superhero spouting filth are the biggest threat against the comic medium. Comics isn't just about batman and superman, there are thousand of other independent stuff outside the media-controlled mainstream capeshit circle but people (especially murricans) are too stupid to explore that jungle.

It's not a meme, it's true.

All the characters look the same because it's always the same few models posing in in different costumes. He's a mediocre portrait painter with a fetish for golden age capeshit.

I hate the low angle shot he always uses. The feeling he's trying to convey is that these figures are larger than life and you look up at them like a child looking at your parents.

>this hipster delusion
The real problem with the monopoly DC and Marvel have over the comics industry is that they also hold a monopoly on the talent of the industry.
Most of the great writers in the industry are already under-contract and aren't free or aren't willing to do long or short form stories in more independent publishers. We see several talents toying with the idea, but there just isn't the financial stability for most writers to just pull an Alan Moore and say fuck it.

Now, the indie side of the industry is composed of "alternative" but otherwise uninteresting works that suffer from being writen by writers to used to the DC and Marvel models (or, God Forbid, webcomics) that can't (amoung other things) write a story with an ending worth a shit, write a story that isn't a "desconstruction" (ugh) or a "throw-back" (UGH) of a genre, write romances that are worth a shit, write for people that aren't your average comics nerd, write a story set in the real world that isn't a crime thriller, Spy Fiction, or dystopian/apocalyptic adventure, write political satire that actually understands that , Hey, Bush isn't in Office anymore, write consistantly on a one shot format, etc. etc. etc.
>>
>>78533416
You do realize comics aren't just capeshit right?
>>
>>78538445
>Most of the great writers in the industry are already under-contract and aren't free or aren't willing to do long or short form stories in more independent publishers

>>
>>78538445
> alternative

The alternative crowd isn't a part of Marvel or DC with the rare exception of someone like Gilbert Hernandez
>>
>>78533369
Why do people use the term "capeshit"?
Is it because it makes you look "edgy".
>>
>>78538497
>long or short form stories
I'm quite aware of of the Ima...............................................................................................................................................................................................................ge (sorry for that, but that part of the publisher's name had a short delay and had to be rescheduled)
Consistency bother, Image is still a inbetween works solution for most artists (hance the constant delays), expect for people like Kirkman that are already part of the CCO.

>>78538610
By alternative I mean, literally "alternative" as "not something you would ever see in the Big Two", not something that is exactly abstract or with a alternative format of presentation.
>>
>>78538669
It's the /tv/ influence. People will unironically have company wars and call each other MKEK or DCasual.
>>
>>78538669
It's a shot at the bland, regurgitated, insular nature of the hero comics. It's really a dig at the status quo, because how much can one writer do with a character that's been around as long as the reader's grandfather? No matter how good a story arc is, the next writer (or editor) will undo it.

As far as I know the term "cape shit" is used
by people who are angry over the fact that the
comics medium in America is largely associated with the super heroes. If what
you are saying is true the term should
primarily be used by disillusioned writers
and not a bunch of random people at an image board.

There have been plenty of good storytelling in cape comics, even outside the 2. However, it is a a low right now with marvel and DC. But look back at early 2000s Marvel and compare it it's a sad contrast. Now they have also lost their two best authors so things are going down for them badly.

>Why people still follow and read Marvel and DC comics?

better art, better colorists, better action, much higher speculative value even with vastly higher print runs, better insentive promotions and on top of that 80 years of history (when they want to pretend it's there)
>>
>>78539807
>higher speculative value

It's like I'm really back in the 90's

The art is mediocre and bland

The action is shit because you know none of it matters because its the same old characters doing the same old shit and anything that deviates from the same old boring script will be immediately retconned.

>better insentive promotions

The fact that they need to incentivise it is usually an indicator or poor quality.

>80 years of history

A history that's a shitty, convoluted mess that only spergs don't hate. It's one of the biggest barriers there is when it comes to attracting new readers.

The big two and their capeshit combined with Diamond's monopoly killed comics in the US. Anyone that thinks capeshit is the only reason why comics still exist in the US is a fucking retard. They killed all other competition in the market in an attempt to get a bigger share yet they've fucked up constantly since then and killed the medium as a whole. Their parent companies only keep them around as IP farms for shitty popcorn flicks no one thinks about after they leave the theater. WB and Disney don't give a shit about the comics.

One of the few selling points for New 52 was Morrison rebooting Superman as a high concept insanity action comic that paid tribute to the lore of the character while making him relevant again and then DC completely ignored it after the run ended.
>>
>>78540028
you want the truth, you got the truth.

people COLLECT comic books, there's a reason for a 75% dip in sales between #1's and #2's, there's a reason why the book that "Changes Everything Forever" or the one that has the most variant covers tops the sales charts over and over again.
>>
>>78541026

This was true and until Hollywood hit comics and both companies completely reformatted to become monthly movie ticket advertisements. The Bronze Age and then the British Invasion guys had a reason to come to the big 2 because they were given the freedom to bring their insanity to the characters they grew up with. There would be no reason for a young Jim Starlin or Alan Moore to write for Marvel or DC over an indie today because some suit would be breathing over their neck the whole time ensuring that every choice they make is in line with their planned ten year future for the movie universe.

Some guys slip through the cracks and get some greatness in but they all learn their lesson in the end. Morrison should have dropped DC ten times but stayed and continued to get shit on because he loves Batman and Superman that much.

I think that most people who disregard "capeshit" would be less likely to do so if they actually read it, much as with video games and Steven Spielberg, who said that he wouldn't consider them to be art until the day someone says, "I cried at level 17" (games, such as Final Fantasy VI, that elicit emotional responses in most people have, in actuality been common since the days of the SNES and NES).

/co/ shitposters can't read, they can barely write. Look at this fucker>>78546084
Doesn't even know what a vocative is.
They have absolutely no knowledge of comics, their opinion is based on the most superficial futile level. They watch a few scenes of cape movies, maybe skew through two infamous page of bad comics on /co/, so they think they know everything.
They are children stuck in their own plastic bubbles. Like any one individual that disregard an entire genre without knowing it enough to form a solid objective opinion.
I only come here to mock them, laugh at their supposed superiority and maturity, when many of them are weeaboos or adepts of some other random cancerous faggotry.

So they think they are better for liking their shitty hobbies filled with garbage authors while dissing others. We laugh at their expense, the day goes on.
