Been on a Star Wars hype since Force Awakens came out, watched all the movies and the clone wars and read some of the canon/non-canon comics. Anyone give me a list of some essential reads? Preferably canon or some good non canon?

Because Carrie Fischer is 59, did a lot of drugs, and has problems with mental illness.
She's a good enough actor to show up and deliver some lines, but not well enough for more.
The X-Wing Rogue Squadron books are really fantastic, though not the first arc or the awful Hayden Blackman wannabe X-Wing Rogue Leader. They're about to be reprinted in Star Wars Legends Epic Collection volumes 2 and presumably 3. Dark Horse also published them all in a nice three volume omnibus set.

It's kind of hard for the comics though because they're packaging the comics together in larger trades but are including what were both canon and non-canon stories in them just because they're set in the same era.

The reason? The movies aren't gonna be about Luke, Leia, or Han. The function for all three of them is to pass the torch to another generation... of fairly bland characters.
It doesn't make much sense to make her into a Jedi because it would take away from whatever Luke is doing and she's not important enough to dwell on.
The writers wisely chose to focus on the most popular character from the original trilogy who just happens to also be the best actor.
