Has some interesting concepts but doesn't do much with them, which is still more than can be said for most Disney sequels. Zira's actually a pretty decent villain, even if practically nothing about her past and motivations makes sense in the context of the first movie.
The fact that they intentionally tried to do another very loose interpretation of Shakespeare for a plot and that they didn't pussy out on violence/death shows they at least were trying to recapture the spirit of the original, despite all the fuckery with the new characters.
It's probably more enjoyable/acceptable for a kid, or if you saw it as a kid, but isn't godawful or anything either. Basically something that didn't need to be made that at least tried for drama and an interesting story.

I had it on video when I was a kid, I must've watched it hundreds of times before I ever got round to watching the original Lion king movie. I liked it a lot back then, don't know how it would hold up today but from what I can remember it had decent characters, especially the villain, decent music and animation up to par with the original which is all much more than what you can say about the other Disney prequels.
