One of the best animated films of all time.
But I feel that this is to Pixar as what Anastasia was to Don Bluth: A masterpiece released after a series of flops and before another flop/s.

Also, Riley is best girl.

I never rooted for Joy because I understood that she was being a massive cunt, and literally everything that goes on is all her fault. I never empathized with any of the characters because they're all so one dimensional because of how they're supposed to function.

It is easily one of Pixar's weaker movies. It's certainly not Cars tier, but it doesn't "wow" in any way.

I liked it. It's Pixar in its element, the odd couple adventure story peppered with genuine emotional moments that we've become familiar with through Toy Story, Up, Finding Nemo, and Wall-E. Not groundbreaking for them, but they tell these kinds of stories so well. It also benefits from coming after Cars 2, Brave, and Monsters University. It feels like a return to form rather than a retread.

Does it? I cry at the drop of a hat when it comes to movies, but what was sad about Inside Out? I watched it and just felt the whole thing was pretty bland and directionless.
>>
Everyone in the theater cried throughout the entire movie. I was stony until the end when Riley comes home and her parents hug her and tell her everything's going to be okay.

My parents never apologized to me like that for anything. They never hugged me either
>>
A while ago, one of you anons said that someone on Tumblr was mad that Riley's First Date is with that white kid at the end of the movie and not someone Black or Asian or Latino or female. Was that true? Never saw any proof.

The only thing I found remotely touching was when Riley's imaginary friend or whatever disappeared. Rest of the movie was pretty boring.

Without any proof, I'm going to say that it is most definitely true.

But no, seriously, I'd say there's a good chance some idiot Tumblr user got all up in arms over an imaginary injustice and wrote a scathing piece on the inherent racism at Pixar.

It's more surprising when something innocent isn't triggering someone on Tumblr and causing them to rack up the likes and reblogs, thus giving them a sense of purpose, and meaning, knowing they're making a "difference" in the world.

Why are emotions represented by free thinking agents who seem to have executive function over what is supposed to be a conscious being of her own right? Are they supposed to be merely abstract representation of the inner turmoil of emotions, because they seem to act of their own volition. Yet at the same time when confront of with scenes of despair to main girl character, sadness who is supposed to be her own free thinking entity seems to involuntarily switch the girl's emotional state into one of sad feelings. This whole set up is further compounded when the girl "shuts down" and loses her core memories and personality traits, the seems like grounds for some very serious mental health issue like schizophrenia or something instead she just decides to get on a bus because she misses home, which is irrational but not pants shitting insane. I don't understand how the emotions are supposed to function in this.

Don't get me wrong, I think it's more than fine for a kids'movie, but anyine past 20 pretending it's geniuous has to be retarded. Also, why is everyone crying? I'll admit that the sacrifice of that freak was a good scene, but come on.
>>
>>78507609
I don't think Riley and the emotions are really separate entities at all. It's pretty clear at certain points that what Riley is thinking and what the emotions are talking about are the same thing. I think it's best if you think of everything you see in Riley's mind is metaphorical, which can get confusing at certain points, but checks out for most of the film. The emotions acting of their own volition is representative of how Riley really doesn't have any control over her emotions except for using Joy to suppress Sadness and to direct the other emotions into positive avenues. When Joy and Sadness are gone (or when Riley is unhappy but unwilling to admit it) she loses control over the other emotions, and then cuts them off entirely until she lets herself feel sad.

The car is on fire, and there's no driver at the wheel
And the sewers are all muddied with a thousand lonely suicides and a dark wind blows

The government is corrupt
And we're on so many drugs with the radio on and the curtains drawn

We're trapped in the belly of this horrible machine
And the machine is bleeding to death

The sun has fallen down
And the billboards are all leering
And the flags are all dead at the top of their poles

It went like this

The buildings tumbled in on themselves
Mothers clutching babies
Picked through the rubble and pulled out their hair

The skyline was beautiful on fire
All twisted metal stretching upwards
Everything washed in a thin orange haze

I said, "Kiss me, you're beautiful, these are truly the last days"
You grabbed my hand and we fell into it
Like a daydream or a fever

We woke up one morning and fell a little further down
For sure it's the valley of death
I open up my wallet and it's full of blood

I just thought it was alright. I personally wouldn't put it in Pixar's top five. I just felt like they could have been a tad more creative with some of the abstract concepts.

It seems like it resonates to different people. There were a few touching moments, but I felt the emotional impact of it to be really underwhelming. On the other hand I've got some friends who were fighting back tears because they could relate to some of Riley's experiences better.
>>
I was pretty disappointed after watching it.
Maybe i expected to much, because so many people praised it so much.
I liked the design of the mind world itself, but every emotional scene was so predictable i couldnt get into it. The movie definitely had potential and alot of my friends liked it alot.
But for me it just felt like i have seen all those themes before in other stories, and handled better there.

I think the main problem of the latest Pixar movies is that they're essentially premised on a gimmicky idea, and everything after that is developed around that single concept. So they basically use this gimmick premise as a means of tempting people into watching that movie and make it worth watching, instead of focusing on a well-written script as a whole.

I read in "The Art of Inside Out" that they wanted the characters to have an ethereal look. As a particular Emotion became excited it became more... what's the word.. effervescent?

>>
>>78501941
I found parts that shouldn't be funny funny like Imagination and Fun Island dying while she was growing up. I don't know if they intended that symbolism.
>>
>>78553596
Well, they nailed it with Joy cause she glows for some reason but the rest doesn't look "ethereal".
>>
>>78548287
Fuckin saved.
>>
>>78554412
They don't look too ethereal because the effect is quite minimal. If the particle effects were more pronounced then yes. It would have been cool if for example for the orbs that made up Anger to vibrate and glow as he got angrier.

I think they decided against this ethereal look because it made the emotions seem less human, when emotions are very much human. Too much of a visual and thematic contradiction, so they scrapped the idea.

Yes, I like it a lot.

As a film, it has some flaws near the end.

However, as a concept, I think it's one of the best that Pixar has ever come up with. I don't think I have ever seen a movie that approaches emotions in this way. It was very cleverly written and surprisingly educational.

Watching this movie made me realize how rather inept society is with understanding emotions. Emotions are such huge parts of being human, yet we aren't taught about them upfront. For the most part, it seems to me that learning about emotions as a human being is like playing a guessing game. There is no real education for emotions which is unfortunate.

I really hope we can see more movies like this that not only make us feel emotions but also teaches about them.

See, I think the movie checks out way better when you think of the emotions more as filters than pilots.

At several points in the movie, the emotions influence an action, but at no point do they actually directly control Riley. For example, when Joy declares that Riley is going to go slide down the rail, Sadness counters this when she changes a memory. thusly, Riley no longer feels excited about the idea and drops it, only to do it again because Joy corrected everything. For another example, we see Riley talking in class and when everything falls apart, she keeps talking when Sadness takes over. Finally, when Riley is unable to feel anything, she still goes about on autopilot, just unable to express or feel anything.

TL:DR: the emotions motivate Riley to execute an action that has already started, or influence her response to information/stimuli.
>>
>>78573212
>needing a body pillow

>>
>>78581761
When Riley sits down and hides behind her textbook she is clearly shocked; "Did I just fucking cry in class?" All the other emotions reacted in the same way but had something with agency on whom to pin the blame: Sadness. They still didn't know why they should blame her, but like a person, Riley could still blame herself for breaking down in class.

This is pretty much proof that Riley and the emotions are inextricably a whole. Their reactions are hers, and hers are theirs.

>>
>>78581901

>>78581847

I'd argue that she just sits down and looks at the textbook. Riley's certainly not feeling sad any more because Sadness isn't there any more, but I can't say there's much of a reaction on her face that points to shame or some kind of other emotion, even if she did feel shame, then there's not all that much to say that either Fear or Disgust didn't press anything to make her feel that way.

I will, however, give you that I like the "feedback loop" model you're going with. There's certainly some bits in the movie, like Disgust reacting to the smell of the dead mouse that work particularly well in favour of that.

Joy=/=Happiness.
Joy is the most necessary emotion to achieve happiness, but so is the other emotions.
Joy, as in the sole emotion itself, is that excitement to get happy rather than the actual state of being happy/fulfilled.

joy
joi/
noun
1.
a feeling of great pleasure and happiness.
>>
>>78582721
First off, joy and sadness seem to be emotions that regard social sittuations or morality, balacing each other, whereas joy is very individualist and sadness is very empathetic.
Anger and fear are the most primal emotions, they are probably some manifestation of the flight or fight instinct and the dominative instinct.
Disgust is both types, but I consider her more of an secondary emotion.
You can have a good anger, fear or sadness memory. And you can also have a bad joy memory. A bad joy memory would be a memory of BOREDOM for example, as boredom is some form of repressed/infufilled joy. A god sad memory is basically some memory where you could fulfill your sadness, basically any love or companionship related memory.
Happiness is fulfillment, it is mistaken for Joy though. Joy is that excitement as I said, it isnt really the pleasure of fulfillment.
