What was the controversy (please don't say "some people thought it promotes race-mixing"!)? I loved the first series, it was so charming and Clarence was a lovely character, so guileless. And it was funny.

Didn't they have the whole season written before he left? He was still on board by the time they were recording most of the voicework, so I think that would mean all the scripts were finished before he got fired.
If you feel the writing got sloppy towards the end, I'd say it's probably because the writers had deadlines creeping up at that point. You often see that in the late episodes of a season. (For instance, I recall the Simpsons writers often talking about how deadlines made the latter part of a season weak.)
That said, I thought Balance was a hilarious episode that ended on a high note. So personally I don't mind some of the snags that showed up towards the end of the season.

It's average but there are a few great episodes.
Those are : Average Jeff, The Forgotten, Rough Riders Elementary, Lil Buddy, In Dreams, and Balance.
