Can someone explain to me why this is $150 on VHS?
>>
>>78485114
Maybe to bank on nostalgia, everyone grew up with that particular one

Because they're the only one selling it, and anyone who wants it badly enough will pay.

That's how it goes.

I'm convinced this is some scam. There's plenty of $5 copies out there. Unless I'm missing something, this seems like bullshit.
>>
no idea, maybe just VHS collectors drove up the price

>>78485147
it's been released on DVD too though and you can buy it to stream on Amazon Prime
>>
>>78485205

It doesn't even seem to be a rare edition or an alternate version that had stuff cut out of later releases. So probably.
>>
I still have this one. It's a Canadian manufactured one from 1995.

Pretty sure I also have a copy of Rock-A-Doodle lying around somewhere.

Ok, this isn't funny anymore.

It's literally just people trying to cash in on the "RARE VALUABLE OLD FORMAT NOSTALGIA" bullshit.
>>
>>78485323
Could probably get some pretty good money for a working one, given Lucas' policy towards the Theatrical version.

This one?
>>
>>78485377
It's a working, THX release with no added SE bullshit that I'm aware of. I thought given the recent popularity spike someone might want it
>>
>>78485387
Yeah actually, or am I wrong on the original thing?
>>
>>78485418
It is the original theatrical cut in the best quality available, as far as I'm aware. An avid VHS collector won't pay more than $5 for it but you would be able to scam someone for $20, easily.

Any of the older VHS releases usually shoot for a lot more.
>>
>>78485418

An older VHS version will have the old Star Wars poster in the front. That one doesn't have any of the digital footage, but there are minor changes.
>>
>>78485434
>>78485444
Ah well it was worth a shot. I hear Beauty and the Beast goes for a pretty penny. Though I have Peter Pan, Snow White, Jungle Book, Little Mermaid, Hunchback and god knows what else stored away somewhere.
>>
>>78485205
People can price their stuff for anything they want on ebay. Just buy the cheap one.
>>
>>78485489
Any of the Disney ones are a good investment. You can find them for real cheap at thrift stores and yard sales and sell them for at least $5 a piece. Beauty and the Beast is popular because it's out of print in all formats, I believe. Same happened with Aladdin a few months before the Diamond Edition release.
>>
>>78485515
>first animated movie to get nominated for best picture
>out of print in all formats

Has Disney completely lost its shit?
>>
>>78485489
>I hear Beauty and the Beast goes for a pretty penny

I think that's only because someone's been flooding eBay with factory sealed copies. There's no reason for that movie to be worth anything.
>>
>>78485547
They do it on purpose so that they can drum up release with "only available from the Disney vault for a limited time!!!" stuff
>>
>>78485610
Astounding.
>>
>>78485114
Collector's item
>>
>>78485547
>>78485610
This, it goes out of print and people scramble for what few copies float around. Then when they release the Blu-Ray presales go through the roof.

Source: I work at a video store and see this happen all the time
>>
>>78485515

There's a bluray AND a DVD version of beauty & the beast. Stop spreading rumors. It's been released plenty of times. Hell, there's even a laserdisc version.
>>
>>78485658
Yes they EXIST, but they are out of print. They aren't making more of them in any format. That's what out of print means.
Sure in a few years it'll come out of the Vault, but RIGHT NOW they aren't making more.
>>
>>78485658
I know that, I own multiple copies on multiple formats. But it's still out of print, which makes it impossible for retailers to get any more new copies and drives up prices. When it's out of print for years at a time, like Disney does, it gets harder and harder to find those copies.

For example, the used video store I work at didn't see a copy of Aladdin for years, and people were still asking about it on a weekly basis. When it came out on blu-ray we sold over fifty copies.
>>
>>78485404
Yeah, you can get a few bucks for it, but anyone who takes a few days can probably find a full set at a Salvation Army or a thrift store for $3. You know how many copies I've run across over the last 5 years?

The DVDs, now that's where the money's in. I missed out of Return of the Jedi from the SA once, but I did get Empire Strikes Back. Now that was a good find. Just wish some fuck didn't get to Jedi before I did.
>>
>>78485658
It's not a rumor, he's right. Disney cuts production of new copies after a while. Of course now with digital and shit it doesn't mean as much.
>>
>>78485720
>The DVDs, now that's where the money's in. I missed out of Return of the Jedi from the SA once, but I did get Empire Strikes Back. Now that was a good find. Just wish some fuck didn't get to Jedi before I did.
>tfw still have factory sealed copies of the 2004 theatrical cut DVDs
>>
>>78485610
The original Disney Vault thing was an accident, struck as a compromise between Katzenberg and Bill Mechanic as an experiment to see how much Pinocchio would sell. Keep in mind Disney was still releasing all its old movies in theaters once every 7 years at this point.
>>
>>78485730

and? So what if it's not in stock at stores anymore? DVD copies on eBay go for $10, same with the VHS tape, Same with the bluray going for $20.

It's not rare or all that in demand to begin with, so I don't see why people think it's a rare film when it's not.

Song of the south on VHS, now that's rare.
>>
>>78485964
>I don't see why people think it's a rare film when it's not

There are a shitload of stupid people, anon. Try working in a place where you deal with them often. You'll meet some smart ones, sure, but there are a lot of real fucking idiots out there, and those idiots would absolutely think Beauty and the Beast is a rare film just because they were told it was.

>Beauty and the Beast is a rare film just because they were told it was.

Thank you. If I can buy it for $7.99 on dvd or vhs on amazon & there's 400 copies available of it online, then it's not rare.

You want rare? Try collecting wrestling videos from the 80s & 90s. Almost none of them ever got re-released due to licensing issues.
>>
>>78485964
And you can get Song of the South for $15. Cash value =/= rarity. And the only reason they're considered "rare" is, again, because Disney wants them to be. You're right, online shopping makes it easier to find stuff. Amazing discovery. But in any used video store it is almost impossible to find or keep in stock.

>>78486037
Best way to get those is to find tapes recorded from TV. The actual videos that were released are fucking expensive and in high demand, from what I hear.
>>
>>78485964
Because all you need is one retard with money.

>>
>>78486370
I've got a lot of dupes in my old pile of tapes, too. Two Peter Pans, two Cinderellas, three Aladdins. That's top of my head.
>>
>>78486442
Yeah, I like to collect different releases and have back-ups in case one tape gets damaged or degrades over time. I think I have about six copies of Jurassic Park by now.

I don't remember the exact details, but I remember there being some sort of explanation for why you occasionally see common tapes being sold at ridiculous prices. It's some sort of way to move large amounts of money undetected between accounts. I don't remember the exact reasoning as to why but it's for some illegal nonsense.
Any way, I collect VHS tapes and it's a good way to find random old cartoons you might not have watched otherwise. I found some random soviet cartoons tape that I've yet to watch, but it seems fun.
>>
>>78486459
That's just good thinking.
My pile was pretty much just handed down from my folks, who were just gonna donate them. Not sure why they'd have so many duplicates, though.
>>
>>78486499

so you're saying people are using VHS tapes to launder money?
>>
>>78486638
Not him but I know some guy at a local VHS store years ago used to sell VHS as a front for his weed business.
>>
>>78486499
So basically, that box of tapes in my grandparents' attic isn't worth thousands?
>>
>>78488167
Forget it, VHS connoisseurs would never pay more than 20 bucks for a tape, no matter how hard to find.

Not true at all. Most VHS aren't worth any more than that but I'd easily pay more than $20 for any of the Guinea Pig movies, Begotten, McDonland Loch and most lost media.

You can buy it at a second hand store for a dollar.

From the release of the DVD it only shown the roadshow version instaid of the VHS version. I wish someone could make a custom HD DVD From VHS verison of Fantasia in 1991 and maybe sell it on the interenet on ebay or on ioffer.
>>
Just remember only losers buy laserdisc. I don't need my prices to go up.
>>
>>78486370
Fuck off, Pollyanna.
>>
The seller is probably trying to cash in on the VHS/Laserdisc collector trend that is going on at the moment.

I know several laserdisc collectors who are quite pissed that prices have shot up so much.
>>
>>78490225
Well, that's what they said in Adjust Your Tracking.
>>
>>78497114
Really? I have a ton including original star wars....
>>
>>78497136
Sorry m8, what you heard was bogus. I know up until it was leaked McDonland Loch was going for hundreds of dollars. Begotten is hard to find for under forty, and most semi-obscure horror movies (think stuff that Scream factory has picked up) are looking to knock about $20-25 out of your wallet.
>>
>>78497147
Might be worth it to check the prices you could sell them for.

Which version of Star Wars is important. The non special edition ultimate versions will go for a much higher price that the normal common releases.

This.

I also know there is a major scam going around with Amazon gift cards. (Some group cracked the card number generator in the midwest. Amazon knows about it and is updating the cards, so it won't be active for very long)

It's either someone hoping that an idiot will not know better and buy at that price or someone/group that is trying to move money around under the radar.
>>
>>78485387
I have that version of ESB from CBS Video (or FOX video) with the poster art on the front

who can i scam?
>>
>>78493241
Fantasia expert here,

in addition to it being the Roadshow version, the VHS version has ALTERNATE takes and extra camera angles which were used for that version but not the DVD or BluRay version.

Watch the jazz interlude scene after the intermission on the VHS then watch it on the other two, not the same angles and shots.
>>
IMO the only reason to hang onto a VHS/LD/DVD if a Bluray isn't available is for extras and/or extended/alternate cuts.
>>
>>78497332
Yeah, most aren't worth shit.

Only the stuff that had small print runs or stuff that was never ported over to future formats sell for any real money.
>>
>>78485205
>>78485114
This is money laundering.
Sell lost of drugs to real people. Sell overpriced shit on the Internet to fake people. Keep books on a small LLC.

You make a bonus when a real person actually buys your shit. It's win win.

Yeah, the CBS/FOX versions were first. But the Laserdisc Definitive Collection is higher quality without the later edits.
