Just what the hell is this girl's purpose in the series? It can't even be just standing there and looking pretty, because I'm in the middle of Book 3 already and most of the times she's not even in the shot or part of the scene - and when she is shoved to the background, like some random, mute extra.
Lin's sister and niece have had more lines than her and they were introduced merely two episodes ago. Same with all those airbender OCs, including that annoying thief kid that gets paired with Jinora now.
Bryke liked Asami too much to get rid of her after the first season, so other than a few moments here and there, she just sits in the background being pretty. Which is fine, since most of the characters that get a lot of focus are annoying except for Korra, Lin and Tenzin.

As much flack as Asami gets pretty much the entire supporting cast of Korra has the problem where the story struggles to find reasons for them to be there.
You could write Mako and Bolin out after book 1 and the series really wouldn't suffer too much.

her role as the daughter of hiroshi is an important book one plot point because of the whole weapons deal between the equalists and future industries. if she wasnt present then hiroshi could have no significant interaction with korra outside of "bwahaha i am the bad guy" because korra doesnt know who the fuck he is. also she is an important foil as a nonbender.

Asami was a character that Bryke, probably Brian, liked too much to get rid of so they reimagined (poorly if I may add) her role in the series into being the protagonists love interest in the last ten seconds of the series.

Well, her purpose--- and this decision didn't come until later in the series--- was to fuck the MC. If she was never in the story to begin with the it wouldn't have changed much at all.
