>That was clearly too much, for Marco’s weak stomach: he quickly took off the white beard and brought up a sick bag. Since the beginning of that expedition, the boy had filled three of those bags, and now he had nothing else left to give, other than dry heaves.
>“There there” Star gently tried to encourage him, while caressing his back.
>Marco didn’t respond — but gave her a miserable, desperate look.

It's one of those features that I'd be happy for them to forget, whilst the usual desire is the exact opposite of that. It's just such a limiting feature for such a low pay-off comedy wise. The party bus episode would have been pretty much the same without it, if not better considering they could have had him do something more than just be ill in a corner. That and it wouldn't bode well for future hi-jinks in season 2, both on earth or interdimensionally.
And as you said, it all comes back to developing additional characters. My one big fear is they skimp in that regard, as cute as Marco and Star are, the show needs more to work with for longevity's sake. Though even us Manna/Jarco fans know the eventual result. Actually, on that point I disagree: from a parctical pint of view, Marco being sick made him not doo much, but from a story point, it was half of the episode worth of character interactions, gags(heh)and tension building.
If he'd been OK, he would've just been by Star's side, doing a lot practically, but pretty much not deserving much spotlight on a narrative point of view.
I'm not mad they made him motion-sick, and actually would be more irked if that element of him didn't come up again.

If you look at the production codes on the Star Wiki, Brittney's Party was actually like the 2nd episode produced (I think Match Maker was 1st). So the motion sickness thing was probably just meant to be a funny one-off thing that later episodes didn't acknowledge, maybe because it'd be really limiting + kind of a dumb character trait to keep bringing up.
Personally I just viewed it as, while he might get carsick if the car's going really fast or moving erratically, it was his whole anxiety about throwing up/looking bad in front of Jackie that made him sick more than anything. Or at least that works if you want an explanation for why it's never mentioned again.

Certainly the core component of cute adventures of this magical girl is the most important aspect they need to stick to. However there was a recent SU shitpost thread where one anon made reference to a document critiquing the show, and having read over it one of the central critical points it raised could be applied to a lot of the popular shows presently airing, Star vs included.
The key critical point it raised was inconsistency in the narrative, and how it impacts shows that run for the shorter time frames like both this and SU do. I fear that Star vs could get a little confused in what it's trying to convey; perhaps it's better if the show sticks entirely with the tone you mentioned, but if it wants to perhaps do more then it has to do it right.

Yeah I wish I'd saved the link to the document, it's one of if not the most insightful arguments I've seen regarding issues in popular modern cartoons. I suppose if Star vs keeps to a 70/30 split on its silly fun side and the more serious development side, we'd still be in for a fantastic ride. For now all we can say is more background character development!

I like that it's tried to do both one-shot and story-arc episodes, and I don't think that's had a negative impact on the quality of the show itself so much as people's reactions to it. Like, the ones who wanted plot seemed almost mad that the show dared to have episodes that could stand on their own, and those who liked it for what it appeared to be at first (mindless comedy) were annoyed when a plot did develop: I remember complaints that a villain like Toffee "didn't belong" in this kind of show from both sides, etc. That's not to say individual episodes haven't been weak, because some definitely have, but I know myself and others like that it's not taking an all-or-nothing approach to plot/comedy. It seems just by nature of the show having both 10-minute and full-length episodes there's bound to be some inconsistency in narrative, but I guess whatever the hell I'm trying to say is that, for me, the show hasn't gone beyond the point of no return in terms of its general tone yet.
Sometimes it also seems like viewers have different definitions of how continuity should be, and that affects how they view the show. Like the whole "how is Alfonzo back from Pixtopia" issue being criticized by some, and others praising the continuity of the laser puppies and certain background details. Overall the show does have continuity, but not for literally every single aspect, and I think that's a thing that throws both lorefags and comedyfags off too in deciding on its tone and how effective it isrr.
Not sure what my general point is beyond that the narrative style works for me, even though it is honestly inconsistent and I can see how that throws some people off. Season 2 seems set to have much more plot in comparison, but it's too early now to know where the show will go from there.

It's not inconsistent at all, some episodes are centered entirely around a particular little one-off story, and others further the main story more. There's overall continuity throughout. Most cartoons and anime are that way. What a goofy criticism, really reaching there to be honest.

I agree that each episode (or the majority of them) is consistent with an overall story, and that some of those stories happen to connect, but didn't really know how to express that.

I suppose one of the big differences it has from the other prominent ships is the two presently seem to dislike each other. Makes for a unique position for a narrative, namely going from actively disliking each other to being neutral to liking each other.
