>About Daphne specifically, the movie will show that she's not a "blonde airhead" as she's depicted in the game. That's "not the best female characteristic for a hit movie in this day and age," Bluth says. Not only that, but Daphe's "sexualized" appearance in the game will be toned down for the movie.

Any thoughts from those who donated to the crowdfunding?

I recall it was closed for some retooling, then opened up again.

Perhaps, but were you one of the donators? I assume most who did probably played the original game. Let's just say gameplay was not its primary appeal.

Hello Reddit!
>>
I don't care if all they're doing is covering her midriff or dulling her pointy nips. As long as they aren't making any drastic redesigns.
>>
Is the crowdfunding ongoing still? Can people pull their support? Can money be returend?

Because yeah, it'd be disingenuous as hell to say "I'm going to resurrect something from your childhood, give me money" and then say "Oh but it was problematic and I'm going to change it" once the check clears. That'd be a pretty clear case of bait and switch.
>>
>>78408108

>>
>>78408166
The Kickstarter failed with $240k and change, so they launched a second campaign on Indiegogo with a $250k budget.
>>
>>78408313
>Is the crowdfunding ongoing still?

Yes at Indiegogo

They reached the target of 250,000 and they will make a 1 minute demo reel
>>
>>78408245

I think the potential issue here isn't about sexuality, but the wisdom and ethics of funding a project through hardcore nerds, then using that money to make a family friendly product. But that's an assumption on my part, which is why I asked for responses from those who actually donated.

I want to get a sense of who the donators actually are, if they've played the original, and if this feel a bit like bait and switch, even if it seems like the logical decision.
>>
>>78408285
I wouldn't have even care really but the fact that they go out of their way to make a big thing about it is what makes me roll my eyes. It screams of trying to pander to Tumblrists.

/co/ has always been really out and about with the whole "/CO/ IS WUV!! WE WELCOME EVERYONE, NOT LIKE THOSE OTHER STUPID BOARDS!". It's been a slow migration to coming here from tumblr over the course of the last 3 years to the point where the place just has this awful toxic hugbox mentality now and has this idea that we are the bestest board ever and anything bad about it is always another board, never perfect /co/. It's really gross. The welcoming nature is nice to an extent, but when you're just welcoming every single asshole that comes here, it just leads to what this place is today.....A place easily triggered by any sort of violence, or anything having to do with race or religion.

Exactly. If you assumed because it's a Dragon's Lair kickstarter you'll be getting huge nipples low cut dress wenches, then that's kind of a fair assumption based on the last movie. However if they say you're not getting it, then it's perfectly fair of you to remove your pledge, if that's what you were pledging for in the first place.
>>
>>78408108
So can we put an end to this type of disgusting shit in woman's entertainment?
>>
>>78411121
Technically not censorship since it isn't even created yet. You could argue Mika and shit like that because it was obviously in a created state then altered but has this even had concrete designs?
>>
>>78412760
Except in many of these cases they are only curtailing the product because of fear of reprisal that is basically the definition of censorship.
It's the same with comics and cartoons refusing to show the prophet Muhammad in their work because they are afraid someone may kill them, just to a less extreme degree obviously.
>>
>>78408710
if they learn we aren't buying shit we watch ads for, they will stop supporting shit with ads. then we're all fucked. right now entertainment is basically squatting in a spare apartment in a building and hacking the records so it looks like it's paying rent
>>78408768
yes but although they have bullied most people into going along with them, they are still a tiny minority. their entire justification hinges on being an oppressed minority, and they're half right
>>78412868
This. there are more kinds of censorship than government censorship (which is illegal). there's still bowing to minority pressure, which according to democracy is wrong. Not to say majority rule is always right (or even usually right), but we sure as fuck can't let minority -ever- rule.

I tried to put money towards the failed kickstarter but never got around to donating to the indiegogo. I've never played the game but donated because I've been a fan of many of Bluth's movies and more specifically because I like Daphne's design, particularly the outfit in OP, which I was hoping would be her design in the movie, but I did know she had a slightly different look in that other game. Discussions like these are the one of the biggest parts of attracting or dissuading potential donors from donating to a project like this. >>
>>78413682

Interesting, thanks for being the only relevant response here. Male or female makes no difference.

I suppose disappointment isn't the right word for me, more perplexed. This reminds me of the edits made to Eyes Wide Shut, which were done to avoid an NC17 rating, but at the same time didn't make the movie any more appropriate for 17 year-olds. At its core, this will still be a knight rescues a damsel in distress movie, and dialing down the sexuality isn't going to change that.
>>

It's funny that the boundary-pushing has to do entirely with men's fap-fodder.
>>
>>78408702
This is my main problem with the modern feminism/political correctness/sjw group
They should be producing things that fit their ideals, or supporting people that do. I may not like Gone Home or any of its ilk, but I'm never going to say they shouldn't exist. If you care about an issue and think you can make a videogame dealing with it, more power to you. You don't injure me by trying, and will maybe eventually produce something I'll like. Pushing boundries has value even if only in recognizing why boundries exist.

Instead, they are as a whole putting hundreds of times more effort into preventing the creation of things they don't agree with. That's not pushing boundries, its shackling creativity to a single viewpoint. I can't say anything specifically about Dragon's Lair. I haven't played the game and I didn't back it, but if you're changing Daphne because you "can't" put a character like that in a movie anymore, I have an issue.

they're probably aiming for a certain movie rating

also this isn't the first time they covered daphne pic related is from the dragon's lair cartoon
>>
>>78418552

That isn't really the issue. Everyone has different opinions on what level of sexuality is appropriate in cartoons, and I'm okay with that. What I find questionable here is that the indiegogo page is filled with artwork with Daphne's original design. Some of the prizes feature her in the nude. At the $5000 level, the backer gets a maquette that does in fact have her nipples sticking out.

This project is trading on nostalgia. I think most people who backed it played, respect, and expect the original. They are taking money from hardcore fans, but plan to make something for a more general audience. I don't question the logic there, but this is something they could have made clear from day one.

SF5 just sounds like an ESRB/PEGI/ CERO situation that got blown up to something bigger than what it really was thanks to the current political climate in the gaming industry/community

That was in a Rated M game in a series with numerous sexual moments in it from fucking Japan of all places, and people wouldn't shut up about it.

You think they'd let a character in a children's cartoon wear a low cut dress like that (even though it's practically everything she's known for)?

This is how I feel, but we must also keep in mind that the $250,000 they raised isn't going to fund a movie. It's funding a pitch. They estimate it's going to cost $70 million for a full length feature.

This never struck me as kowtowing to SJW, although I expected /co/ would take it in that direction. This is about them trading on nostalgia of the hardcore to fund a movie that would still have to rely on traditional studio funding to be made. It's already very difficult to make a 2D animated film of any kind, and nearly impossible to make one that isn't a laser-targeted family film. I feel they didn't communicate this reality well enough, and the backer bonuses sends conflicting messages about what such a movie would be like.

Why base a children's movie on a game where the central character is a barely clothed woman with pointy nips then? I was under the impression it was an "adult" movie, frankly I was under the impression it was more a labor of love/catering towards a niche that'd expect that but the whole bit with expecting it to be a hit movie sort of dashes that. I can understand thinking that but at the same time Don did say he was using the money to make a pilot for a big company. He needs the big dogs to approve of the film. He definitely can't do that with pointy nips.
>>78426124
Are you going to cancel your pledge over pointy nips?
>>
>>78426112
>frankly I was under the impression it was more a labor of love/catering towards a niche that'd expect that

Were you expecting them to make the entire fucking movie on 250k because it's a "labor of love"? You realize that'll either pay for a single man to live in poverty for the next twenty five years as he makes a film singlehandedly, or a team of fifty to live in absolute squalor, eating potatoes and ramen and living bunched together in one room hovels for a single year of development.
They need 70 million for the full film. They're not going to make a niche animated film as a labor of love because that concept literally doesn't exist. Even the fucking zero budget arthouse-ish indie flick Heavy Metal took 9.3 million to make. And that's in 1981 cash, inflated it's more like 23 million.

It is a bit shitty that they're not more clear about their goals it in the kickstarter page. But then, The Goon plastered it all over their page over and over, in bolded giant font, that it was just a storyreel and not the full movie and people still thought 400k would buy them the full movie, so I don't know.
>>
>>78426372
>I can understand thinking that but at the same time Don did say he was using the money to make a pilot for a big company.
Pretty much, it boils down to this. The huge problem here is not that they're making changes to appeal to a big company, it's the fact that this Kickstarter was a thing. It's exactly the opposite of how KS should be used, which is to fund smaller initiatives that would be otherwise risky or impossible to pitch.

I really hate this. It's going to become harder and harder for individuals to get their ideas into the light as long as large companies are free to use crowdfunding as an advertisement platform and a safety cushion to build their pitches. Fuck everyone involved in this project.
>>
>>78426476
>which is to fund smaller initiatives that would be otherwise risky or impossible to pitch.
To be fair, even though Don Bluth is well known it's not as though companies are begging for his pitches anymore. He's an underdog here.
>>
>>78426372
>Are you going to cancel your pledge over pointy nips?

No, but I am because I don't want to support someone that chooses selfcensoring in order to appeal to a vocal minority.

If they had been honest about this from the get go, I wouldn't have pledged at all.
>>
>>78426595
Bluth deserves better fans.
>>
>>78426524
What I mean is that larger companies should not be involved, period. There should be a specific clause in KS forbidding campaigns that are not about finished products. If your project can't be made through crowdfunding because you need too many millions, then you probably shouldn't look at crowdfunding at all.
>>
>>78426595
It's not a vocal minority. They're not doing it to appeal to SJW's, they're doing it to appeal to america at large. Go out and ask any random person on the street, preferably a parent, if they'd take a kid to go see an animated children's film starring a woman with pointy nips poking out through her skimpy little sling bikini.

This is what's baffling me about this thread. You people are so hellbent on your mortal enemies that you're failing to see the reality of the situation at large. The problem isn't tumblr, they're not doing this for fucking tumblr, shitty tiny little niche-ass tumblr doesn't even begin to register on their radar. They're doing this so that they don't get flooded in negative press from every single corner of mainstream society and get mobbed by the majority.
>>
I mean KS is becoming an advertisement platform. Dozens of projects are abusing it to get free money and safely gauge interest and they're going to overshadow legitimate projects by individuals who wouldn't be able to get their projects funded if not for crowdfunding.
>>
>>78426387

>>
>>78427004
>This isn't going to be some major motion picture release though, is it?
It is. They want 70 million for the whole picture, they're only creating a story reel with the kickstarter cash, which they can then go around and sell to the big studios to get picked up. Basically what you're paying for is the chance to see a Dragon's Lair movie get made, not the actual movie itself.

They're doing it because animated films cost major money. Off the top of my head, probably the cheapest animated film I can think of is Fritz the Cat, which had choppy as hell shit animation and zero plot structure and is practically the definition of indiehouse 'fuck the studios and make it for the niche'. And that still cost 5 million dollars, inflated.

In all honesty, $250,000 for a minute-long pitch is too high, and the entire idea of making it a theatrical release is both unrealistic and behind the times. If he could raise $300,000 from crowdsourcing, match that with another $700,000 from investors, outsource the bulk of the animation to Japan, he'd have himself a nice 22~44 minute direct to video special that he can peddle through Netflix, Amazon, iTunes, and the like. Maybe even a debut on Adult Swim. I can easily see it netting 500%~1000% returns.
