Robot already had emotions, considering his weird quasi relationship with shadow, he lacked feeling, in this case the one he is focusing on is pain, to give those emotions meaning.
This is the basic principle behind the "poor haggard man is happier than a rich one" cliche, pain means a greater feeling of reward and accomplishment.
