Much better than I expected it to be. It's in the same vain of what MoS was intended to be except not a complete mess. It has heart and consequence, with characters that behave naturally without betraying any of the most sacred of cows, in a world that feels real and comic booky at the same time. The events of the second issue weren't malicious. They weren't edgy. If anything Clark knew there were people who had murdered others who presented a risk, and as he grows to do, he sought them out to bring them to justice. If he made any mistake, it was having the hubris to think he could handle it on his own, and din't need to ask for help, or even tell the Sheriff who might have had a better idea of how to manage the situation. At no point did he do anything to intentionally hurt the criminals. If anything the situation got out of his control, which led to his losing his cool and control of his abilities. It's tragic that this person lost his arms, but this was not Frank Castle shooting them off because he thought they deserved it. Clark even expressed remorse as soon as he saw what he had done, and tried pleading that he'd let them go. As soon as he realized he'd made a mistake, he did the responsible thing and stopped. True edge lords would have just gotten off on it and done more of it.
We can't let ourselves to believe that a being with abilities that make him a force or nature like Superman was born with control of his abilities. Most emerged, and weren't in control at first, and that allows for the potential for people to get hurt. While I don't like seeing Superman hurt people, this was a growing pain, and a teaching moment, and Landis wrote Clark learning a lesson here, and vowing to be better and a step closer to the Superman we know in the future. I'm not a fan of MoS or Landis, but if I need to see Superman hurting people to learn a lesson, I'd rather it be teen Clark wounding a trio of murderers, over adult Clark in the suit being written into the taking of a life being the only solution to his first trial as "Superman."

Anon, I understand where you are coming from. I don't like seeing Superman do things like this either. The thing for me though is that perhaps it is like seeing how the sausage is made, but with his powers, there is absolutely believable potential for accidents like this to happen.
If society is so deadset on seeing the flaws of its heroes, or seeing that they aren't perfect, and demanding to know the context for why everything is the way it is, and Clark Kent grows up to be the paragon of heroism, and everything good about humanity, the Superman that I think you and I love, and does so on some level because of lessons learned from an incident from his youth when he jumped into the deep end of a situation before he was ready to, lost control of it, and that resulted in sociopaths winding up in the ICU, but still alive? I'll allow it. This was not intentional. This was not malicious. Clark did not stop and make a conscientious decision to shoot the guys arms off, or snap Zods neck. He, a teenager, did what teenagers do, and thought he was ready for more than he was ready for, and lost control of the situation in more ways than one. For me, edge is edge, when it is forced, and while I can understand how you could feel this was forced, that is a very organic scenario. Even Morrison says that writing Superman isn't hard and that all it takes is writing him doing the same things we do, just on a Super level. In my opinion this accident is very much your average teenager fucking up big on a Super level. If people demand to see what prompted Superman's restraint, I'd rather the incident result in injuries to bad guys in the middle of nowhere, than a loss of life of thousands, and the death of a rogue. It may not be what Superman is about, but again: This was not Superman.
Look, lets forget all the edgy/not edgy talk cause really that comes down to a matter of opinion.
My main problem with Landis is that he is just not a talented writer. Nothing in what he has written is particularly original, creative, or well delivered.
I liked Chronicle and parts of American Alien #1 and #2. But nothing about them was original, he just figured out that western Akira would work for Chronicle, and re-tread moments from Smallville/Waid/Morrison/Byrne for Superman.
I think one of his biggest weaknesses is dialogue and inconsistent dialogue.
He is like an idea guy with bad ideas.
