I think the reason that they're going with the alternate art style for the flashback might be to show other gems without actually directly showing them. I think that we might see silhouettes of gems that we'll see in the future, like the diamonds and other well-known gems like topaz, jade, and emerald, which we won't see directly for several episode yet, if even this season.Thinking that Emerald in particular might appear and be related to Ruby/Sapphire in some way, in reference to their real-world relation

EE&E really utilizes the fact that it's a cartoon to its advantage. It has some absolutely unhinged moments and even episodes that completely throw common sense to the wind, and it actually manages to work in the show's favor. It has Loony Tunes levels of slapstick and visual jokes, like multiples of the same character appearing on screen or characters hovering in the air breifly before they fall. Besides that the show also has fantastic animation, extremely creative use of sound effects, and characters that play fantastically off of each other.
The art style is pretty rough at first, but you get used to it and there's a marked improvement after the first season. It also works much better in motion for some reason.
We finally have a reference for him! I'm going to keep calling it a him because it's a genderless monster and that's what I prefer.
