Hellbeast arc was bad because Gob was aping shounen manga without actually having the quality action scenes that make them tolerable. It killed off a comic relief character for no real payoff (was anyone actually that sad about it?), lots of dialogue was wasted on a plan that didn't even happen, and the plot didn't actually move anywhere. The most that happened was that Ally got a ghost boyfriend so that there would be no confusion over who was actually in the running for Pasqualo's robocock. It just felt like filler.
Gob played it safe and that's not why anyone reads his comic. He's taking risks now, he's being creative and silly and putting us all on edge again unsure of what's coming next. This is Gob at his best.

I don't remember anyone being mad. It was more like "oh no dog is dead" and it that was kinda it. He wasn't really an important character, he was just funny. The whole backstory thing got shoved in there at the last minute too to make it feel cheesier. Didn't come across as all that sad, just felt like Gob wanted for someone to die so that Pasqualo coming back didn't make the arc pointless.

Just for the record, I thought Poop's sacrifice was awesome and one of my favorite scenes in the comic. The art wasn't shounen-quality, sure, but Gob did try hard enough on it that the important scenes stood out from the rest of the comic.
