He's immune to his own powers, as well as his brother's. His eyelids block/absorb the optic blasts.
They can't pass through or affect ruby quartz lenses, so the optic blasts just stop when they hit them.

Only his skin is made of rock. We've seen underneath it a few times and he's made of meat underneath the outer layer of epidermis. This should be readily obvious however, since he still has his blue eyes from when he was a baseline human.
Also, at least one panel has shown us what his specialized toilet looks like, and it's kind of like some weird piece of construction equipment mixed with a wood chipper. So it's implied that he literally shits bricks.
