Looks like it could be great. Though anything would be better than The Box Trolls.

I didn't think Box Trolls was bad, it was no Paranorman but it wasn't bad.
>>
>>78139787
It was really bland and unpleasant to me. It lacked focus or any sort of compass.

I'm wasn't so sure about the last movie, but, I don't know.
This one seems to have a lot of heart.
>>
>>78139614
I'd rate it lower than Coraline and Paranorman, but Boxtrolls still got a few laughs from me.

And the animation on things like that mech at the end really deserve some credit. That must have been murder to do stop-motion wise.
>>
Laika makes another excellently crafted and heartfelt bomb. It's nice to know such talented people can still have the ability to convince Hollywood types to waste their money rather than just souless weasels.
>>

>It's nice to know such talented people can still have the ability to convince Hollywood types to waste their money rather than just souless weasels.

I think the owner of Laika is loaded (he's the son of the president of nike or something like that) so even if a film flops, he's still rich afterward.
>>
>>78138065

Sucks that even though it's from the only competent animation studio today, it'll probably lose to one of the CGI furfag films.
>>
>>78140542
You don't understand Laika. The owner is Phil Knight, owner of Nike. His son is the president and CEO of the company. Phil just throws money at whatever thing his son wants to do, he made a rap album in the 90s for example. Laika movies could make negative and still get made. they could give you $20 with each ticket and still get made.
>>
>>78139787
It definitely wasn't bad but it was incredibly bland. The troll design was fairly uninspired, the story wasn't all that interesting, and it was an overall forgettable film. Paranorman might have been a bit bland with it's setting and general design occasionally but Aggie and the finale made up for it by quite a bit. Coraline was their only film so far that had a wholly unique aesthetic and Kubo looks like it will be along that same vein.

Laika's president has Nike bucks so they don't have to worry about money. Ever. They can make whatever the fuck they want without worrying about the financial success of their films. Ever wonder why after Paranorman got flak for having a gay character and then put gay characters in the very first trailer for their next movie? Because they can make whatever the fuck they want without worrying about the financial success of their films.

They're doing a good thing, but if it doesn't appeal to the mass public, then there won't really be any changes.

I really, really hope this doesn't pull a 9 and that it succeeds/is critically successful. It could open new doors for action focused theatrical animated films.

Looks pretty cool, and I've really liked the Laika stuff I've seen so far.
>>
>>78150723
They're both fantastic movies, but Coraline managed to hit it out of the park with nearly every facet. The music was great, the designs were pretty unique, and it managed to be creepy as hell when it wanted to. Paranorman was good but it had a few issues that made it not as good as Coraline even if it did do a few things better.

It's a movie that's coming out next year. The trailer is right in the OP. If you read the thread a little you'll see it's from a studio called Laika, which also made Coraline, Paranorman, and The Box Trolls. I'm not sure if many details about the plot have been released. What more would you like to know?

Rich people are fickle and usually cunts. Sometimes they're cool, but usually cunts.
>>
>>78150723
I'm really torn. I'd argue that objectively Coraline's probably the better movie for its pacing, but not only do I find the "weak" parts of Paranorman to not really be all that weak, but the strong parts are really fucking strong.
>>
>>78150723
Paranorman islike my all time favorite animated movies, what pacing issues are everyone talking about?

>This is what I don't understand. Why can't some rich people with billions spend a little money on animated movies? I don't get it.

Because they spend it on a bunch of other stuff.

Just like right now we're wasting money on shit when we could just give a couple dollars to Wikipedia or some other nonprofit and end their charity drive right now.
>>
>>78165280
Wikipedia already got a million dollars last time. They don't need this much money.
>>
Have Laika's films broken even? I know they have Nikebux but it would be nice if they were sustaining themselves.
>>
>people hating on paranorman
It was better than Coraline. The character design was the best in any animated film and the way they used it as a story element was inspired.
>>
>>78166733

All of Laika's movies probably have made money after merchandising and home video sales are taken into account. They are a small, privately-owned independent studio that is at least partially self-funded. This changes the math for them compared to other studios that need to please greedy shareholders and take out loans at big interest rates.

Laika is sustained by real passion. They don't need huge hits, just moderate and predictable performance at the box office.
>>
>>78167929
Coraline was pretty flawless. Paranorman had flaws. Coraline is the better movie.
>>
>>78169750
Never saw any flaws with either film.
>>
>>78169786
Paranorman just wasn't as stellar a movie. It had lowpoints and a lot of it wasn't very memorable at all. Plus the plot was kind of eh with the exception of the twist.
>>
>>78169998
Eh, I thought it was the better movie.
>>
>>78169786
Not the anon you're talking to but I agree with them, something about Paranorman wasn't as great. The opening scenes (the making of the doll and Coraline exploring her house/outside) alone have better atmosphere then the entirety of Paranorman, imo. The non supernatural conflict in Paranorman is also more cliche than Coraline: Coraline is dealing with new, kind but eccentric neighbors, Wybie, and her busy parents, while Norman is just "oh he's different so every single kid at school bullies him for some reason."
>>
>>78154440

>The non supernatural conflict in Paranorman is also more cliche than Coraline: Coraline is dealing with new, kind but eccentric neighbors, Wybie, and her busy parents, while Norman is just "oh he's different so every single kid at school bullies him for some reason."

I mean... it's not "oh he's so different" and "for some reason." It's established that Norman told people he talked to ghosts, and saw ghosts, to the point that everyone in the very small town knew about it. Couple that with probably more than a few public displays of this weirdness, and you have a recipe for being bullied. Especially in a small town.
>>
>>78170141
I liked the atmosphere of Paranorman better, messed up suburbia is always interesting. The fear of the towns folk was also portrayed great.

puppet master
like, ww2 survivor whos wife is killed because of his anti hitler propaganda who takes the literal (or figurative) souls of his dead friends that were fightning the nazis, and put them into animated marionettes, for the purpose of killing as many nazis as they can, rather than do good. but also killed alot of other people not related to ww2, and had their own likes and personalities

and thats what this reminds you of?

I think Paranorman had a better structured climax that really built up to something with a great twist, but there's something about Coraline's overall style and atmosphere that really resonates with me.

Paranorman focused a bit more on laughs, while Coraline had a sense of wonder that gave way to the dark undertones and rising tension. Both great, but Coraline's hits a bit harder for me. I'd love to see Laika tackle horror themes again someday.
>>
>>78171691
My point was that he suffers the common trope of being the "weird kid with no friends." It doesn't matter why, he is that character archetype, and we're supposed to feel bad for him because of it. I think Coraline is so much more interesting because she is flawed in a lot of ways: she's angry that her parents won't pay attention, she's bored, she treats Wybie like shit initially. Norman is the sympathetic kid who gets bullied by literally everyone thing again, though you're right of course there's a reason
>>
>>78172152
Yeah. Coraline is such a good protagonist. She's so fleshed out and human. Norman is just a regular "misunderstood kid protagonist". Coraline has teeth.
>>
>>78160387
I love Coraline's soundtrack. There's a great blend between the sense of calm and everything becoming increasingly ominous.
