Amalgam wasnt always about mixing the characters that makes the most sense, but also about popularity and sales. X-Men was the most popular Marvel-team and Justice League was the most popular DC-team. So they tried to mix the X-member with the JL-members at that time (cuz you wanna have the current readers pick up those books).

If you look at backgrounds, power source and personality you might end up comboing Green Arrow with Iron Fist, for example. They're both rich entrepreneurs, skilled in martial arts, who are committed to individual liberty and fighting for the disadvantaged.

Iron-Man and Batman have nothing in common, besides being rich and no superpowers (which also applies to dozens of other characters like Lex Luthor and Oliver Queen). Their worlds (motivation, villains, sidekicks) dont match at all... thats why Iron-Lantern worked so well.

The Stanes+The Joker Family=Mentally unstable high ranking Stark Industry employee, Obadiah Stane, was contacted by the Iron Hood gang to steal some tech from his place of work. Iron Bat interfered, however and accidentally pushed him into a vat of chemicals, fusing the stolen suit with his skin, and dropping him into the pit of madness. His insane hatred for the Bat, caused him to become his greatest enemy.

There was a second JLA/X-Men amalgam that was completely different from the Amalgam universe's, it happened because Doctor Strangefate was trying to recreate his world and he just merged whoever was around in Doctor Strange's sanctum. First he merged Storm and Wonder Woman to recreate Amazon, then he merged Bishop and Superman, then Batman with Jubilee, Cyclops with Kyle Rayner, Jean with J'onn, I think Wally with Cannonball, and Aquaman with Iceman.
