Dick is supposed to represent what Bruce would have been like if Bruce had someone there to give his life meaning after his own personal tragedy. That's part of the reason he started working with a boy wonder. To redeem the childhood that was taken from him. Dick is Bruce without all the angst, but only because Bruce wanted for him to be that way so that whenever he looked at Dick he'd see the boy/man he could've been.
