What does /co/ think about Judge Dredd? I just got a bunch of volumes of the Complete Case Files and after work I'm going to get comfy and read through them.
>>
Only things I've read were crossovers with Mars Attacks! and Batman. I liked them.

>What does /co/ think about Judge Dredd?
I think the movie made me want to read every single Anderson story.

She's basically Saturn Girl as a super cop. It's like someone designed a character specifically to my tastes.
>>
>>78001111
Love the character. Inspired me to cosplay and goto convention.

You're going to enjoy the books. If you really get invested, I'd recommend downloading the torrents for Judge Dredd Megazine or even 2000 AD to get a broader view of his world. Also there is one story omitted from case files due to copyrights.
>>
>>78003337
Burger King one? I've seen it'll be reprinted.
>>
>>78003337
If you are talking about the burger wars episodes of the cursed earth story they were recently reprinted in a new delux volume.
>>
>>78001120
The Mars Attacks crossover is a pretty good example of the classic era of Dredd.
>>
I started reading some case files and noticed the first few stories in each volume are super short and okay. Do they get longer? I keep saying people suggest stuff like the dark judges/judge death arcs, are those proper long? Also is there colored versions of those? I vaguely recall seeing that.
>>
>>78004633

The way Dredd was originally printed only some pages were in colour and the casefiles don't reproduce those colour pages mainly for cost reasons. The casefiles switch over to full colour from volume 12 onwards. There have been coloured reprints of some early Dredd stories like Dredd vs Death but they have never been collected. If you've seen colour early Dredd it's probably scans of these reprints or fan made colouring.

Dredd stories continue to vary in length from mulit part epics hundreds of pages long to five page one shots.
>>
>>78001111
I like it alot

he is based and shit but I really like characters that follow their principles and do their job like it or not

the crossovers are funny and there are good storys all over, be it big arcs or some "a day in the life of dredd\megacity" chapter
>>
>>78004633
If you are looking for a long story to get your teeth into I'd suggest the Apocalypse War/Block Mania reprinted in casefiles vol5. It's action packed with some fantastic art and is one of the more important stories in terms of shaping Dredd's world.

Hmm tricky... probably The Pit. It's a little different from most Dredd stories be more of a police procedural and focusing on a group of supporting charecters.
>>
>>78001111
Who's the better female Judge? Anderson or Hershey?
>>
>>78006278
Damn, that's an impressive re-creation, looks spot on.

I read Judge Death and Necropolis ages ago, recently started on the case files, only on #3 but loving them so far. My favourite stories are City Block 1 and 2, more satirical than the others I've read so far.

I love its attitude toward continuity. Like how people still bring up Dredd killing half a billion people in the apocalypse war, or how they bring back old characters like Nixon

All of the spin-off issues were pretty good, and much more in tone with what I've read in 2000AD Dredd.

Thanks. My sis and I worked on it over a year. Made the shoulders out of eva foam, pill bottles, and pipe cleaner for the claws.

The shoulders are mounted using velcro and then leveled off with pads underneath my jacket to give the broad shoulders illusion.

Only thing I hate is that I couldn't get a metal helm done in time and had to make that one using a chicken bucket. Guy next to me in this pic used a 3D printer for his and it looked damn good.

Do so. It really pays off to read it with a very close analytical eye in terms of storytelling and pacing. See how Wagner and Grant do rising peaks of tension and action while still keeping everything in context and constantly raising the stakes. And of course, Ezquerra's art is phenomenal. The man was doing "widescreen comics" nearly twenty years before that became a thing and ten times better.

>>78026449
Oh yeah, I've seen that fig! Looks incredible. It's really nice to see the undershirt of the uniform, how it all works out. Very cool stuff.
3A I'm really hyped about because they do quality work, their Lawmaster looks great, and a few months back they did a podcast with the 2000AD folks where they confirmed plans to do more side judges, like Giant and Hershey. They have an Anderson coming out on 2016 maybe, so once they get a good female judge mold, Hershey can't be that far behind.
And brother, I'd do unspeakable things to get my hands on that.

It pays to look up some info on Ezquerra's original design. A few tidbits:
>Ezquerra was mailed a picture of David Carradine dressed up as Frankenstein from Death Race 2000 as a basis for the character.
>The helmet was drawn to resemble an executioner's hood.
>The Lawgiver has a boot holster because Ezquerra had been told judges would spend a lot of their time riding a motorcycle. The original Lawmaster design also has a holster for a rifle too, like WWII motorbikes.
>The eagle was taken from a 50 Pesetas coin from Franco's Spanish regime.
>Several other details were also taken from Franco's military and police uniforms.

My favorite part of this cameo is that it says she's been assigned a riot. And while I'm sure that just means she's something like senior judge in charge of the ground forces, a part of me wants to believe Dredd 3D's Hershey is enough of an unstoppable badass that she can stop an entire riot by herself.

Only if the perp resists. If a perp surrenders, then a judge is expected to bring him in. But because murder is usually a life sentence (and attempted murder of a judge is 100% a life sentence), a lot of perps choose to try their luck and shoot their way out or make a run for it. And the moment they do, all their rights are forsaken.
>>
>>78027187
Circumstances can also get you around it.

If I recall right a high level sov assassin simply got life despite his many killings.

PJ maybe was arrested after surrendering and later his death sentence became life after bargaining some info over to the Judges. Dredd did try to have him killed though. And if you do not know who maybe is, he is basicly Dredd's Riddler who likes to kill for fun.

Read the entire run up to the year 2000 or something
10/10 even the worst stories are readable and the best ones like apocalypse war/dredd singlehandedly winning a global war, helltrek, judge child, necropolis and oz are all great. The short stories about dredd's daily life were my favorite.

Even the skysurfer parts that were the weakest in my opinion were still decent enough to read.
>>
>>78031940
Also helltrek would make excellent sequel material for dredd 2012. It's be a great chance to showcase the world outside megacities, although arguably 99% of the fun in dredd come from the absurdities of living in a dystopian megacity.

Before Dredd can stop them they take over the Hall of Justice and crucifiy the council of five, but Hershey survives because she's too legit to quit.
The important thing here is that Chief Judges come and go, but only one got literally nailed to a cross for her city.

There's quite a bit of Henry Flint drawn Dredd coming up in trade paperback. Volumes for Dead Zone and Titan for February and June 2016.

I can't speak for Titan (I guess this paperback will include the sequel) but I read Dead Zone in the Megazine and it has some of my favourite Dredd artwork.

How is the Megazine at the moment?

Solid right now. A great main Dredd story by Wagner and MacNeil featuring Judge Beeny and Total War. Enjoying Brit-Cit adventures in Storm Warning and Lawless is fun but I can't quite get past how similar to Copperhead it is.

So question JA, how do you think she is losing Chief this time? I can't see her leaving office except in a body bag or the complete destruction of the judge system.

I read the first arc of Lawless and enjoyed it. Best B&W comic I can recall recently.

Don't ger me wrong Lawless is really good the art in particular is fantastic. I'm just easily confused reading two stories with such similar settings and main charecters.

Lawless really benefits from following up on the Insurrection trilogy. You can show how the system is "supposed" to work in Lawless, but keep the looming threat of SJS Space Bastards in the background if things ever get out of hand.

I do like stuff that expands on Dredd's world without just being Dredd in a different hat

It's possible that, with things like Mega-City Confidential, they may be setting Hershey up to go full McGruder (have a big fallout with Dredd, become bitter enemies, etc.), but lately they've smoothed a lot of things up so unless something really bad happens, I imagine she'll go down during a mega epic in defense of the city. Or at least, that's what I hope they'll do. Apart from a few awesome pages, I was honestly downright disgusted with how she was treated in Enceladus. Absolute bullshit.

Megazine's doing fucking great right now. Great stuff all around.

Dredd vs. Hershey when?

Swear to God, I wish someone would tell Dredd to stop being a fucking shady dick to the biggest ally he has. She trusted him with the final decision on the Ranger program just like six weeks ago, and now here he is, running around behind her back like an asshole. Again. If anything, I'm happy to see that if it does come down to blows, at least half of it will be Dredd's own damn fault.
Not gonna lie: I'm super fucking into this whole teetering friendship thing right now. Like honestly emotionally invested. These two need a good huge epic crisis to bond over again.

Hear ya on the investment part. Every time you think Dredd has built some level of respect of Hershey, he says fuck it and undermines her.I think what makes it so interesting though is that Hershey is more than willing to step down and let Dredd take over.

With all the disagreements they've been dropping since chaos day, the next big event has got to have their relationship playing a big role.

And man, now I'm putting it into a bigger context and realizing this is Dredd learning from his mistakes. Remember Mechanismo? That was also a disagreement over a patch-up measure taken by a Chief Judge after a major crisis. He tackled that head-on, clumsy and almost panicking, and got his badge taken from him after that. So now he's a lot more methodical and sneaky about the way he "protests" similar measures. He didn't throw the full weight of his investigation in the Mega City Confidential case, surely confident that it would leak itself eventually. Now he's using Wally Squad to undermine this privatization plan, which also came from the Hall of Justice. He has his greviances, and for the most part he's right about them in the long run, but instead of trying to appeal to Hershey's sense of justice or twisting her arm he's sneaking around her back to sabotage everything. He's forgetting this isn't McGruder, this isn't someone who's insane or has a hate boner for him. And yeah, sooner or later that shit's gonna blow up in his face.
My only hope is that when it happens, it happens under Wagner or Al Ewing's pen. I really didn't like Rob Williams' bits with them in Enceladus, besides the control room scene.

I think thats the beauty of it all Unlike Marvel's civil war where this type of division resulted in making one side a complete dick. Hershey has in part been shown to be making practical choices.

Shes stated the city is fucked from past events and can't simply bully its way like before.

Every program introduced has been done with the intent of filling the coffers and getting the city back on its feet. And best of all, shes asked Dredd to come up with a better plan beyond "muh lawl" or gtfo the way.

I'm just wondering where this is all heading. We keep getting stories every once in awhile about the system needing to change, yet Dredd seems conservative against any change while Hershey and the department as a whole has no problems going further right. Maybe Joe will have a relapse and remember Fargo's dying breath?
