Along with that, it did what other episodes kind of lacked where it goes to an old setting and expands on it, with that portal-esque trap in the factory. I think of Marcy and Ice King as representing death, the old world, and the past, and Finn and PB as representing life, the new world, and it's future. The four of them and their connection with each other through time sort of represent the balance of old destruction and new growth that Ooo is made up of.
PB and Marcy are equals, powerful and immortal, experiencing forever together. But while PB is always thinking of the future, inventing and expanding and moving things forward, Marcy is stuck thinking of the past, stagnant and with no desire to do much of anything. PB creates and commands new kinds of life, but Marcy is queen of nothing but the dead.
Finn is a mortal being that reincarnates to experience life anew over and over. Like grass that withers away in the winter only to grow back fresh and green every spring. The natural way of life. That's why his astral beast is a bunch of butterflies, because they symbolize souls, change, hope, resurrection etc. Ice King is stuck in the winter - clinging to life but never completely withering away. He's a ghost of who he used to be, confused and with no purpose, frozen in time and never changing.
Bold and dynamic vs. cowering and incapable.
Marceline and the Ice King have always stuck around, haunting the land and looking out for one another. Finn and PB are drawn to each other, him being a defender of life and her being a creator of life. And with Shoko we've seen that his soul had a connection with her beyond his lifespan. Maybe that could continue? It would be cool, having a destined bond sort of thing, always eventually seeking each other out like Marcy and the Ice King do.

When Finn was younger Jake was always on his butt shielding him from baddies and helping him out with stuff, so this may just be another form of that.
Finn's old enough to know by now, but since Jake ages twice as fast as him he might not have realized just how much time has passed, plus his dumb kids growing up so fast probably threw him of even further.

It's gotten back more action and adventure but there's still a heap of pointless BMO shit 8 fucking episodes focuses on Simon and Marcy old timey shit with a solid does of yuri teasing PBXMarcy for good measure. In fact they care so little about the main characters rather than provide competant comedy relief through the first proper arc they're reduced to side characters that play literally no role in the story other than fucking up and looking terrible.
It's technically better than previously but AT had gotten so shit that it isn't hard to say that about a season. What we have here is not adventure time. It's the writers fully admitting they have no idea what's going on and just writing their self inserts and waifus.

While I do agree that Finn and Jake were unnecessarily diminished, Jake's irrational fear of vampires worked at setting up a foreboding tone. Characters being genuinely afraid of the antagonist is something that the show rarely does and I thought it was done well here.

I would argue that Jake's fear made the antagonists seem all the more dangerous. Finn being the one human besides Marceline made him all the more vulnerable which would have been a nice dimension to play with.
However, they didn't use them for all that much, so it probably would have been better to just have left them out.
