Depends who you ask. I know zweihanders have those extensions after the hand guard to increase their overall range.
Otherwise great swords are pretty much all blade and a lot of it. Problem is, lightsaber blades are near/completely weightless. So the weight needs to come from somewhere in order to create the same heavy swings you'd get from a great sword. In this case, the upper part of the hilt.
It's completely ridiculous and pointless considering great swords only make up for their slowness with range and how hard they cut into shit due to their weight, when lightsabers can cut almost anything.
While we're on the subject of lightsabers, if you could master just two forms, what would you choose? For me I'd go Soresu+Djem So.
