I think the explanation is much simpler. People didn't swim recreationally back then, and the people manning ships were poor people plucked off of harbours all over the place, rather than hand-picked from fishermen who'd actually spent their life on the sea. Poor people had even less time to frolick about in a lake, because they were working 20-hour days just to stay out of the poorhouse. And once you were manning a ship you had no time to learn how to swim, despite spending all your time at sea. Then you start consoling yourself with the idea that it's better to drown quickly, because you have no choice.
None of this explains modern sailors and definitely not the solo-sailors, though. They're just fools.

I would consider myself a moderate liberal and I'm hearing support of SJW politics from friends and co-workers who I thought were moderate in a similar degree to me. Well, obviously one can't prove what the writer had in mind unless they said what was meant, but it seems likely that that was the message that they were trying to convey. There's an obvious parallel between the negative self esteem caused by negative portrayals of cyborgs in the media and the negative self esteem caused by negative portrayals of blacks in the media, which is typically a concern of SJW's. It's possible that the writer was clueless of the parallel, however that seems very unlikely. Cyborg is not written in a vacuum. When you're writing a character, you're probably going to base most of their beliefs off of your own beliefs and beliefs of other people. The obvious belief that this would be based off of is the one which finds problematic portrayals of blacks in the media. The writer may have been aware of the parallel but disagreed with the message it is parallel to. This too I find unlikely. Why should the writer have Cyborg whine about media representation? I'll let you answer that question. Why did the writer accentuate Cyborg's final point? I will let you answer that question too. I will say that, while I have not read this particular comic, that excerpt is quite out of character for the Cyborg I've read about in comics. I will also point out that there is a long tradition of comparing being a cyborg to being black in stories featuring Cyborg -- heck, the character practically seems made for this specific purpose. And I will say that it is common that writers communicate through their writing, their protagonists, and especially through heroes and many other comics have had SJW messages recently. Of course, admitting that the message was intentional, it's possible that the author is not an SJW, just someone concerned about the representation of blacks in the media. However the initial criticism was not a personal attack against the author, but an attack against the vehicle of communicating an idea and how it fails to conform with reality.
