I live in a country where three hundred bucks can get you a reasonably comfortable life for a month, and that number will go down a bit next year. Whenever characters mention or handle cash something inside me burns.

Canadian here, so I guess I'm pretty much American already - but I'll try to deny it.

The big things that make me yearn for America are Hulk Hogan's theme, Metal Wolf Chaos, and the third music option from that Yoshi puzzle game for the NES.

In /co/ things, though, I generally love episodes/shows with roadtrips across parts of the US. Seeing different kinds of scenery makes me want to visit, some of it seems pretty cozy.

For some reason, Captain America never really got to me, and I saw Superman as more of a symbol of virtue in general than as a symbol of America. Probably due to cultural intersection and such. The places they fight in and ideals they protect feel pretty much universal, or at least similar to Canada. I watched Liberty Kids, too, but it felt more like a balanced period piece than something that made me cheer for the USA.

The only time I really every get super-hyped over America in /co/ stuff is sometimes when watching propaganda cartoons. The one that made me cheer the most was the part in Scrap Happy Daffy when all of Daffy's ancestors showed up, ending with an Abraham Lincoln duck says "Nay, Daffy! Americans don't give up!" And generally, when the Battle Hymn of the Republic plays in a cartoon, I start smiling.

When it was a kid, I was mesmerized by pepperoni pizza. They popped up in cartoons all the time, and I used to think they looked gross - but when I actually tried a slice, it blew my mind. Restaurants eventually started to sell pizza in my home country, but it wasn't the same as the ones sold in the States, and I legitimately thought that if I lived in America, I could get great pizza all the time.

Which I do; don't get me wrong, I love pizza as much as ever. It's just that coming to the States with the rest of my family wasn't worth it, at all. It was a delicious mistake.

Canadians sometimes feeling patriotism for the US is not uncommon from what I've seen. The two countries are so closely related geographically and culturally. Combine that with the fact that America's national identity is SO intense while Canada's is so lukewarm and you've got a case of nationalistic dysphoria on your hands. Like I want to go "fuck all" and go on an adventure without any of the bullshittery of the last decade or so and just have weird fun shit happen to me.
I get this feel really bad when I read stuff like The Rocketeer, pic related and Disney Duck comics. Or watch, say, The Iron Giant or Gravity Falls.

That post-war period when America was fully mapped out so you could travel between all the major urban centers, but without the level of infrastructure, commercialization and technology that makes them totally inescapable, seemed like the only time the phrase "to get away from it all" really mattered. Because you really could just disappear into the wilderness for a while, find a nice quaint community off the beaten track or a commune of bizarre art hipsters, then eventually return to your previous life. A good mix of possible adventure and relative safety.

Ultra patriotism
Nothing pisses me off more than trying to sneak in discretely messages or morals about how america is a neat little place
But if a gun totting muscle bald eagle kicks down a door to punch terrorists in the balls while star spangled banner plays in the background, I can get behind that
>>

nothing makes me want to up and go to the USA more than the disparity between the release dates for most anything. Anybody want to take a guess when Song ofthe Sea released in the UK? Any takers?

Why can't Americans just be quietly proud?

It mostly depends on which ends of the islands you're on. The South is filled with farms and has an ruined embarrassing excuse for a main city called Christchurch. It's mostly a place for farmers and bogans

The North is a mix of farm areas and cities. Auckland is where just about everything in NZ happens and tends to be the focus. Most of the ethnic minorities are there.

tl;dr South island is good if you want to be/ are a farmer, North is city people

It's rather like a Japanese cultural festival centered around a school "dance", with a lot more implied underage drinking and sex. There was a period of time when large areas of the country were cut off from outside culture. They developed their own queer local forms during that time. Prom is one that survived TV. It is not important at all if you plan to leave the small town you were born in and never come back.
