They kind of blew their load with Korra. Like she dealt with the literal embodiment of evil and even made it so that people having their bending removed became an easily remedied non-issue.

The way of getting around having the Avatar around is to say that the current Dark Avatar is around Aang's age, whereas the Avatar is still 2 or 3 years old, as the previous DAvatar passed before the previous Avatar.

They pretty much proved that the avatar is an empty concept and that you can quite easily throw half as much money at some actual talent and with the exact same amount of marketing and get something as good if not better AND is toyetic as well.
