Honestly,it's a "cartoon" in the purest sense
There's no major overarching plot,the jokes are pretty good,and visually it's nothing short of eye catching.
There has been just enough character development over the seasons to make you care for them,their individual quirks,mannerisms,and overall tone is entirely separate from one another.Just like older cartoon icons like Porky Pig or Foghorn Leghorn,they're reactions to their situations feel different and entirely unique.
I think the biggest problem that the show faces is that it isn't timeless.A lot of the gags are dependent on current technology,fads,and current pop culture.There's only a handful of jokes in the show that would still be relevant and somewhat relate-able (Like Gumball trying to return vidya) for the next generation.

Great definition and analysis there anon. I agree mostly what you said except a minor thing on character development. Some characters still have troubles in characterization and development, or some characters who may have enough appearances but lack of define traits. Even Ben mentioned Penny and Anais, who are both making many appearances, still need time to fully develop their characters.

a lot of the humor revolves around hype culture as well, despite not really understanding what it's hyping. like when they were watching internet videos, it was basically parodies of YouTube circa 2006, and felt stale on launch since the episode came out within the last few months (years?)
I'd watch a show about Nichole being a badass mom over most of the throw away episodes. Modern audiences don't like characters that are unrealistically good at everything, since there's very little real life analouges and it makes them harder to insert as generic family position x. but I think it would be legit anyway.

I loved season 1 but I wouldn't say it was better, just different. Same as the new ones. I think the show has stayed always consistent with a few minor changes here and there. I do miss the season 1 format though. I can't believe it's been 4 years since the premiere. I was 14 years old.

Finally started watching it from the begining on kisscartoon a few weeks ago and am just coming to the end of season 3. Its a great show

Leslie is exactly what he/she/it is: a living plant. Given the wacky-yet-a-normal-thing-to-them things going on in Elmore, giving five excrements on the family lineage of supporting characters are the least of most people's concern.
